proper coolant changing 4.6l engine

Hi freefam and welcome to FTE

Here is what the shop manual says......
(the cylinder block drain they are talking about is a small plug just above the oil pan on either side of the block. Don't remove the 5 (I think) bolts that go straight into the side of the block. The drain plugs have allen heads if I remember right)...........

Drain and Fill

Drain

WARNING: DO NOT OPEN THE COOLING SYSTEM WHILE IT IS HOT OR WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.

CAUTION: Coolant must be recovered or disposed of properly.

NOTE: About 80% of coolant capacity can be drained with the engine in the vehicle.

Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the radiator cap one turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the radiator cap.

Place a container below the radiator draincock (8115) and open the radiator draincock.

Raise and support the vehicle.
Drain the cylinder blocks (6010).
Place a container below the cylinder block drain plug.
Remove the cylinder block drain plug.

When the coolant is drained, install the cylinder block drain plug.

Close the radiator draincock when finished.

Fill

Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the radiator cap one turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the radiator cap.

Add the proper coolant mixture to the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.

Install the radiator cap.
Move the temperature blend selector to full warm position.

Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature.
Add the proper coolant mixture to the radiator coolant recovery reservoir until the coolant level is between the "COOLANT FILL LEVEL" marks.

Turn off the engine and allow the cooling system to cool.
Repeat Steps 1 through 7 until the radiator coolant recovery reservoir level is OK.

cooling system fill

I changed thermostat on my 02 about 1-2 months ago and have yet to been able to get air out of system. I filled the reservoir and let it cool, then filled again I have even filled the coolant and let the truck run for almost 2 hrs while making sure the level didn't get low. it has no coolant in the oil nor is it leaking out anywhere. It does not have any indication of a blown head gasket, but yet I have poured about 8 gallons on coolant into the system (Most of which overflows out the reservoir when system purges air pockets) HELP PLEASE
