I just pulled out of my driveway last night and about 2 houses down the truck shuddered and then stalled, it wont start either, it has a normal crank speed but just wont start and I know its not out of gas because I just put 50 bucks in the tank yesterday. I think its the fuel pump cause when I turn the ignition I hear no noise except a click under the hood. where is my pump located on a 88 351efi? (bronco) If there is anything else that it could be please list it, my bronco is parked in front of my neighbors house on the street.
Check the enersia switch on firewall inside cab next to the brake pedal. If it was tripped it would cause the fuel not to get to the fuel rail.
You might want to check the fuel pressure at the shreadder valve on the fuel rail if you have one. I know the '89 - 5.0 engine and the '90 - 5.8L engine have the valve on the driverside fuel rail.
Also, on your rig there are two fuel pumps. One low pressure pump inside the fuel tank and one high pressure pump mounted on the frame rail. I just replaced my fuel pump in my '90. The '90 was switched to one pump (high and low pressure units built into one unit inside tank). There is also a solenoid on the fender well inside the engine compartment on driverside next to the eec test connector, occasionally they may go bad.
tite is right , but you should also check the coil & the ignition module on the base of the distributor. The hi-pressure fuel pump is right beneath the driver's footwell inside the L frame rail & the low-pres. is inside the gas tank. (Technically, the later system ONLY had a hi-pres. pump in the tank.) The fuel pump relay looks almost exactly like the EEC Power relay, but one is brown & the other is green and I can never remember which is which.
thanx for the info, I found that the fuel gauge broke at the same time, saying it was on a full tank. it ran out of gas sucking everything from the bottom, gunk, dirt, rust into the pumps causing failure. i'm just going to replace the high pressure pump (in frame) and see if that works. if it doesn't I have to drop all 32 gallons of fuel or siphon<--- (spelling check) the gas out. I replaced the fuel filter today, its the worst thing i've ever seen mud type stuff came out of 1 end while clean fuel came out the other end. I'm so lucky the grime didn't get into the injectors or I would have been screwed. I know that the engine runs fine because I put starter fluid in the throttle body it runs for 3 seconds then sputters. so I know that its definatly the fuel pump
You may also have a filter in the dual-function reservoir on the L frame rail over the rear axle. Buy a new Wix (forgot the PN) filter before you start because that's the only source I found for the big O-ring on the bottom of the reservoir, which you just unscrew (like an oil filter) to get to the filter. When you unscrew it, you'll stretch & ruin the O-ring, so don't try it without a new part in hand. I think it was ~$12 from NAPA when I built this Bronco.
I checked the relay, thats working. the ignition coil is brand new (MSD blaster) spk plugs, and wires. I know that its the fuel pump, I just want to know what were to happen if both low and high pressure pumps were bad and I only replaced the high pressure pump? I don't hear either pumps when I turn the key, just a relay click under the hood. I know that te engine starts and runs becuase I put starter fluid in the manifold. it runs for 3 seconds then shuts off.
Nevermind all that!! I just replaced the fuel pump(in line) and she's running again. I'm so glad thats all that that was. it took a very short time to replace also.
