Need advice.

I'm currently restoring my truck. I'm hopefully not to far away from primer. My current 390 still makes a ticking noise. It was ticking non stop only stopping at a load on the motor at low rpms. After new lifter and new push rods its not as bad. At idle now it has no ticking. Having no tachometer I'm guessing it ticks around 1700 to 2200 rpms. above 2200 or so it stops ticking. Should I take the motor out and totally rebuild it? The last owner said it was around 2001 when it was rebuilt. I have no idea on the mileage on the motor. I wasn't planning on taking it out yet. Being that I'm going back to the factory color I wasn't worried about the firewall. I'm rebuilding this truck to go not show. I'm wanting to enjoy it soon. I have a idea that I should of just replaced the cam with the lifters. I did the ultimate sin by doing so I know. What are your thoughts on what to do?

Did you replace the oil pump and clean the pick-up screen?

No I sure didn't. I have great oil pressure so I didn't bother. I haven't checked my lash. I thought about going to longer push rods, but I went back to the standard size. I have a sneaky suspicion its my cam that's wore. I checked to see if there was a kit to have adjustable lifters and it looks really costly.
