I replaced my front wheel bearing assembly a little less than a year ago. I bought the Duralast one from Autozone because of the price and it had a 1 year warranty (just like the Timken). Obviously it would have been better to go with the Timken, but I didn't have the money at the time. My warranty is about up so I jacked the front wheel off the ground and spun it. It's making a grinding / rumbling sound, sort of like it's starting to go out again, but not as bas as it was the last time I changed it out.
I have two questions for you guys with experience:
1 - Could this noise be anything other than the bearing going out again. I know the sound is coming directly from the center of the hub, but I didn't know if there is anything else in there that could be making this noise. The reason is that when I buy one and switch it out and then take the "bad" wheel bearing assembly back to the store to get my money back (under warranty) they said they can test the it and if the bearing isn't bad, I don't get my money back. So I just wanted to make sure it's the Wheel bearing going out.
2 - Is there any difference in the make-up of the wheel bearing assembly with the coarse threads opposed to the fine threads. The last time I had to replace it, I was in a small town and the Autozone only had the coarse threaded. So I had to switch out the studs (which sucked).
Bumping an early morning post already ? let us wake up first over here in the other time zones
The experts will come along as they wake up ....
If it were me and I was concerned about warranty running out, I'd go back to sellers and tell them to honor the warranty before it runs out....
worse case is that you have to redo it but with new 'stuff'...
(and fyi, shrink down your trucks pic size, too wide for normal viewing - although it IS a nice pic !!!! )
may bad man, i wanted to start calling this morning to see if the store had the parts in so I could tackle the bearing this afternoon and would still have a chance at getting on the water, first thing in the morning. i guess I did jump the gun a bit.
I don't think I'll have a problem with them honoring the warranty... as long as it's the bearing that is bad. I just want to make sure it's the bearing that is bad. I don't get any play in the tire, just the noise.
I've replace two unit bearings on mine. One was also a warranty replacement. Both times you could hear it grinding. But I had wheel play up and down. I had to send my original one back to have them look at it before they issued a credit.

Back to the original problem, this isn't PC magazine! Even if it's not the bearing it has to come apart to find the problem. Odds are however it is the bearing.
