Hello, I normally hang out in the 73-79 Forum but recently purchased my first bumpside. It's a 70 F100 2wd long box Custom. My question is this:
What was available as far as upholstery fabric in the Customs in '70? This truck has a seat that needs recovered. It currently has a plaid cloth upholstery on it. I'm thinking it's probably been recovered at some point but dont know for sure. Did Ford offer cloth seats in a Custom back then? I'd bet they didn't since a Custom is the stripped down model. And does anyone have any pics of what a stock Custom seat looks like? It also has carpet over the top of the rubber mat. I havent pulled back the carpet yet to see what the mat looks like as far as wear, and it is a decent quality automotive style carpet (not house carpet) Could this have been dealer installed? or would the dealer have pulled the floormat out first? Thanks for your help in advance..............
Likely only rubber mat and vinyl bench seat was originally in truck. You can buy seat covers and carpets from couple of the resto places to change it over easily.
i dont know about upholstery so i bought myself a little book and it tells me all about auto upholstery and interiors. pretty sweet.
i realized now i am gonna do the carpet myself.
stock auto interiors i found in sc sells extra plush carpet by the yard. jute padding too.
its the special plastic backing that makes it auto carpet.
so im gonna get a heat gun and do it. for cheap.
its easier to find a premolded carpet. but what happens is those only have jute padding on where your feet goes, not the whole thing. and it says you have to do additional trimming as needed, and for seat bolts and seat belts........
so you may as well do the whole thing yourself is the way i see it.
first year of the custom fords.seats and carpet were upgraded along with woodgrain on the dash and door panels, along with woodgrain on the side mouldings and the tailgate.
Mine has no wood grain, and has the Custom emblem on the rear of the bed. I'm thinking that it was just a barebones Custom and a PO added the carpet at some point and had the seat recovered at some point. Thanks for the input...........
Anyone have any pics of the correct bare bones seat? Im looking at buying the upholstery for mine and have seen several different patterns. I'd just like to get the closest thing to original. Possibly a 70 brochure?????
Thanks BigBlack71.............I thought that the Custom seat was pretty basic as far as not a lot of stitching but couldnt remember or never really knew. Im not looking for a 100 point resto...........just something that looks like it could have come from the factory. The catalogs Ive been looking at dont show any difference between years or trim levels for their pre-sewn upholstery so I just wanted to find something close. I think I have...........mucho thanks!!!!!!
WOW!!!! Sweet truck............The one I have is nowhere that nice, It's nice but nothing like that one. Mine is just a Custom. Do you know what the difference was between the Explorer and a Custom? Mine has a plaid seat that looks like that exept worn out. I thought it had been recovered at some point since the door panels in mine are black and the seat is a yellow plaid. But now Im wondering............mine does NOT have the Explorer emblem on the glovebox door however............making me wonder what I have going on here?????? This is my first venture into "Bumpside world" I normally mess with the Dentsides so I'm just trying to learn something about them. Thanks for all the help so far.
