Ok, so I have a 429 with L and L headers on it, and the driver side header gasket recently started leaking. I went to two local auto parts stores, and both of them tried to give me exhaust manifold type gaskets. The manifold gaskets aren't quite as precise as the header gaskets, so they will leak. I finally got one of them to order a pair that are supposed to work for headers, but the two end ports are off just enough that they won't seal. Can anyone here give me a part # or brand name of some gaskets that you guys use? Oh, and I have D3VE heads
390,get a set of aluminum or copper gaskits they are thicker than the compisets and seal very well as i use them on all my 460s with headers i also use them for the bottom 3 bolt flange useing double lock nuts end of leaks! jegs, summit ebay ect have them hope this helps regurds joe
Ck out FTE sponsor "JBG" Bronco Graveyard, get the thick header gaskets $30?.
Also make sure there is no oil, grease ect....on your hands when you install them.
After install do a torque ck to book specs, then drive around till normal gauge temp and do another tq ck.
I have the L&L headers too and had the same problem with the stock gaskets and crappy header bolts that come with the headers. I switched to the reuseable aluminum gaskets and ARP stainless bolts and all the problems went away. I think the aluminum gaskets I used are made by Percy's.
I use Remflex gaskets. They are graphite and 1/8" thick and crush 50%. They'll seal anything, no matter if the surface is pitted or warped. I had a constant passenger header exhaust leak(something isnt flat I'm guessing) and put these on and havent had a problem since. They're spendy ($60) but worth it if you're tired of going through a ton of gaskets trying to find something that works. 100% guarantee on them too. Just DONT bend them!
Cool! Thanks for all the replies! I think I will probably use the Percys aluminum type. I just wanted to know what works and what doesn't before I order from Summit. I am very impressed with these headers though. They have had the same gaskets for about 5years and just blew out about 4 months ago. My hedmans on my old 390 blew out about every 6 months.
