Ok so i have a f150 4x4 with a 460 in it and it only gets at best about 7 miles to the gallon. so i have decided to do an engine swap but am undecided on what to go with ive narrowed it dow to a 302 351 or a fuel injected 300 out of a newer truck. the truck is currently an automatic but i have a 4 speed sitting in the shed. Im jsut kind of asking everybodys opinion and then what all im going to need to find to do the swap?? I know alot of you are not thinking its a smart swap but id like to be able to afford to drive this truck th last tank of gas i only drove about 80 miles on! So let me know what you think!
Do the FI 300, get the skinniest tires you can find for the wheels you already have, find an AOD tranny to mate up to the 300, lay the tailgate down or remove it altogether, yank the factory A/C (if your truck has it) and let me know where to pick up that 460!
i am guessing you would have aprox 3.50 ratio rear end gears makeing that 460 turn at about 25 to 2800 rpm on the high way look in to a gear venders over drive it will cut the rpm down to about 2000 @ 60 mph, get rid of the stock holly carb if thats whats on it now [they just dump the fuel in] go with a edelbrock 600 cfm carb set lean for ecomomy change out the cam to a low rpm "tork" all my 460s get aprox 14 to 16 mpg with this combo 79 f350 s/c with 12 ft camper 79 f250 501 cid stroker thats the secret with these engines is to cut the rpm as they have lots of tork and rpm isnt needed
Yes the truck has 3.50 gears and the whole point of this thread is getting rid of the 460. I am not really happy with the power it makes. the truck has a edelbrock 750 on it now. although i would probally keep the 460 if i could get 13-14 mpg out of it with out throwing to much money at it. Im running 33 12.50 tires on 10 inch wheels

What kind of budget are we talking here? If you're not happy with the 460s power thats just going to get worse with a smaller engine. The 460 is one of the cheapest $$/power engines there is.
probally about 1000 bucks. im jsut saying compared to the other ford trucks ive had the 460 kind of seems like a turd. So anybody have any suggestion of anyway to spuce the motor up then im all ears and maybe i might just keep it in there and save myself some time
like i said a mild tork cam, edelbrock intake, headers, duels an after market hei dist [about 50 on ebay] realy wakes these motors up and theres not a dodge hemi in town that will leave me in the dust a cheaper way to go instead of a cam is to change the timeing chain/gears to the old style 429 set [pre 72] it advances the valve timeing about 5 degrees or so the after market hei dist has a faster advance curve compared to stock and these are cheap '' seat of the pants'' upgrades that you will feel or if you want to spend some real money build a 460 based 501 stroker like i did 550 hp/500 tork/6250 redline rpm gearvenders overdrive that i can split the gears [6 speed] no top speed limiters here after one try the hemi boys give up and go home when they hit 2nd gear all storys aside a few cheap tricks will help alot
