auto tranny question

can i swap in a 4.0 tranny in place of a single solenoid a4ld? my local bii junkyard is asking 500.00 for an a4ld and 850.00 for the 4.0 tranny. my 87 bii with 2.9 and a4ld has only reverse. i hate seeing it just sit in my yard. especially since i recently got a set of 32x11.50s on it. no lift with those tires look sweet!!!

Short answer, yes.

If you don't care about 4th gear or the torque converter lockup clutch, you won't have to do anything else. However, if you don't care about 4th gear and the TCC, you might consider getting a C3 instead.

If you don't care about 4th gear, but want TCC lockup, you'll have to figure out how to get the two wire plut to attach to the three wire socket in the new transmission.

If you want to settle for manual control of the 3-4 shift, you will need to figure out how to wire in a toggle switch that you can use to manually control the upshift into 4th gear (the circuit is a fairly simple DC circuit with a ground side switch, so it wouldn't be hard to do with a wiring diagram to guide you).

I'm not sure, but I think the valve bodies can be swapped. If so, you'd need to put you single solenoid valve body into the new transmission and you'd be ready to install.

There might be a few other minor considerations, but the main consideration is what you want to do with 4th gear.

could my "reverse only" situation be caused by a stopped up filter? doesnt seem likely since reverse works perfectly but im hoping for the best. havent been able 2 do anything with it yet. wifes grand cherokee lost 3rd and OD about 80 miles from home. gotta get her fixed up first. plus had a 73 yamaha zippy 80cc scooter (pretty rare) that needed attention. (it belongs 2 a good friend and his grandaughter wants it fixed. haha)

it would probably be cheaper and a hell of alot simpler to drop your transmission and get it rebuilt. that's what i did with mine. but i have a manual.

I had a stopped up filter on mine and the symptom was sluggish response. Nothing as drastic as having reverse only.

thanks for the info my friends! i pulled the tranny and disassembled it. found a broken thrust washer and almost all clutches burned. most of the fiber plates had no fiber on them at all. the washer that was broken is the one that goes directly behind the center support and i found it by the OD drum. time for another rebuild.
