Trans has been holding solid temps for the past 2 days. Moving from Alaska to New Mexico. It must have just been the -40 that my truck didn't like that morning. We're in Fort Nelson, British Columbia, Canada now. Pulled some steep grades up and down all day today and trans never got over 130.
As you come through the willamette valley in OR give a shout if you need anything. Assuming you are heading south on I-5.
Mark, that makes a lot of sense about it gelling. I'm sure that's what happened.
Miller and Chris, thanks guys I appreciate it! I think we're probably going to go the scenic route, down through McMinnville to see the aviation museum then head down 101 all the way down the California coast.
Is it correct to say the bypass works by pressure (not really temp) and when the oil is hot the pressure is less so the bypass closes and the oil goes through the coolers. And when the oil is cold the pressure is higher and the oil pushes the bypass open to let the oil shortcut to the return to the transmission through the same port but bypassing the coolers.
No, that's not right. The bypass only opens when the coolers are plugged. There is no temperature effect, other than if it gets cold enough the air to oil cooler will plug with gelled ATF.
The bypass works only on pressure. It was not designed to bypass the coolers to help warm the trans. It is only there to keep ATF flowing to lube the rear of the trans if the coolers are plugged.
