No issues using an auto column in a manual application.
You can disconnect the coupler from under the dash, as noted in the previous post.
If the housing and the upper shaft are badly worn, you'd probably be better off getting a rebuilt unit or having yours done professionally. One or two major parts and the parts costs exceed the whole unit...
Its the drivers' bad habits that usually destroy the upper end of the column. when you get the column straightened out just remember: its not a grab handle...
