Okay, so here’s the rundown. Lately I’ve been having frequent trouble with the ignition system on my 77’ F-100 custom but the real problem is that I just can’t figure out the exact cause. Currently I have a very limited budget so as of right now I can’t really pour everything I got into replacing all of the ignition parts, so if I could find the culprit that would really save me a lot of trouble. Anyways, the problems began when the coil and condenser went out which I then replaced to fix the starting issue. A few weeks later the truck went back to not starting. The engine would click when I tried to start it but wouldn’t crank and then shortly after that it would crank but wouldn’t start. I thought it might be the battery which I jumped but that didn’t do any good. I’ve also tried replacing the spark plugs and solenoid but still no luck. I know the problem might be something really obvious but I just don’t want to keep on guessing anymore so if you guys have any helpful advice regarding this issue it would as always be greatly appreciated.
Can you provide some more detail on your truck? A '77 should not have a condensor; it should have electronic ignition. Is this not the original engine or distributor? Are you saying you have points?
There are two issues, which may or may not be related: not cranking, and not starting. Which is it not doing specifically - cranking, starting, or sometimes both? Your post makes it clear you think the ignition system has a problem, but you haven't explicitly stated the present symptoms. Whether or not it won't even turn over, or just won't fire up will steer the troubleshooting process. Just as a side note, the ignition system won't prevent the truck from cranking, just starting.
Hi,
Sorry to be unclear. The truck will crank but will not start. It's like it will not get over the hump. It is an original 77 Ford Custom 351 engine. It has points and a condensor. The truck was acting this way a while ago and I replaced the ignition coil and condensor and it ran like a champ. About 2 months later it started the not starting all over again. I have also moved across the ocean and moved to an elevation of 100 foot level from a 6000 foot level. I do not know if that matters. Thank you
If you have points than you do not have the original ignition. It should be a dura-spark system. Someone may have even changed the engine. You may not have a 351M
