Hi, I went Mudding over the weekend and noticed that when I am in 4x4 and going through harsh terrain (over bumps or through deep mud), there is a loud clunking noise coming from under the middle or back of my truck, I checked it out and discovered the rear u joint has a lot of play in it and needs replaced the yoke is good, but it seams like if that was making the noise it would do it in two wheel drive as well, also the transfer case jumped out of gear a couple times after being submerged in water, could i have a bad t case? I checked the fluid in the case it is good and clean.
c6 tranny w/Borg Warner 1356 i believe.
the truck is a 1989 f250 superduty 4x4 with a 351
lifted ten inches on 40 inch tires.
Check the detent mechanism bolted to the side of the tranny is not packed full of mud or something.
Perhaps the notches in the quadrant are worn out or the rubber spring is played.
I have a selector off of a ZF/1356 sitting in my spares, I could take a pic for you.

Back side, facing the transmission. You can see the peg in the slot. This is selected 4L.

This is where the shifter bolts on.
There is a captive rubber block in between the shifter piece and the cast arm that is the pivoting part of the linkage.
That rubber pushes the stick back to the right and locks the peg into the notches of the quadrant plate.

I really appreciate the detailed instructions, thanks, when i get home i will pull that off and check it out.
How do i know if the rubber part is bad? will it have play in it?
Thanks man, i'm looking forward to checking it out. Wont be able to let you know if its the problem till later tonight though. I am at work right now. I have one more problem and if you can help me with this one you will be a life saver, I replaced my steering column yesterday and i'm having an extremely hard time getting the shift rod that goes from the gear box to the steering tube into the fitting on the new column. I have greased it, clamped it, beat it, short of pulling the rubber bushing out and welding it, i'm at wits end?? any suggestions?
Well i checked that piece thoroughly and it appears to be good, it doesn't seem to be worn at all. While i was under there, i did notice that the front drive shaft spins freely is that normal? and the rear drive shaft has about a quarter inch of play seems to be coming from the yolk in the rear end and the yoke in the transfer case.
also when i'm driving it a highway speeds it shakes like it gonna fall apart i have to keep it under 60 i do have 40 inch swampers that are chopped but i think its a different shake.
Rotational play in the driveshaft is normal, it is the backlash of the ring and pinion gears.
If in 2wd, the front shaft should be free to spin.
As long as the pinion yoke is tight and the universals are good there should be no vibration.
That it doesn't occur until a particular speed makes me think it IS your tires. (sorry for the edit, I was replying from my phone while waiting for SWMBO)
I really appreciate all your help man, the u joints seem tight i replaced the rear one still doesn't explain my clunking noise, when i'm in four wheel drive and the t case slipping, the transfer case only slipped once when after i was submerged in water stuck four a while so i'm not really worried about that but the clunking was pretty consistent, my girl thought it was coming from the front passenger side( where she was sitting) but i thought it was coming from the middle or the back she was probably right. what is up there that would clunk under stress in four wheel drive?
