injector problems?
I have a 97 powerstroke. I have stage 1 injectors, a modded 17 hpop, and a dp tuner chip. I was recently on my way home and it made a loud clunk and started blowing white smoke everywhere. Truck will barely stay running and is running very rough. I was told to remove plugs on injectors one at a time and did so and all it changed was it turned smoke from white to black. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well, oil will turn white if its is on the exhaust side of the turbo.
So, it was a thought.
If you are having big issues, you could have blown a tip, which in that case, you'll have to remove the head, unless it went out the tail pipe.
As for the correct diagnosis for how to find it, I am not sure. but I wouldn't want to run a motor with a blown tip in the chamber.

i guess it could be the turbo but no oil is leaking anywere that is visable. the local international shop said injector. that is clays thought as well. smoke was white on the way home and idling is more of a grey/black and smells burnt to me. the amount of smoke even at idle is unreal. i am going to pull injectors tonight. is making clattering noise as well. i am hoping it is not the bottem end of the motor still running good oil pressure. no anifreeze loss and high egt. starts right up and no codes per my AE. thanks

Lots of white smoke and a knocking sounds is common when a nozzle lets go.
But cracked, split, or broken nozzles are very rare to begin with.
If it was turbo, you'd see the wheels chewed up or feel excessive play and it wouldn't necessarily make engine noise, just pass oil out the exhaust and smoke at idle.
Pushrod might be the culprit, too.
Only way to know is to pull the injectors and look at the nozzles. If none appear to have chunks missing, then they need to be cleaned really well to examine for hair line cracks running vertical up the nozzle's side.
Good luck.

You could be having an o-ring problem, or a cracked cup problem.
use a light and inspect the injector cups.
Best deal as well while you have them out is to replace all the injector o-rings and the copper washer on the nozzles.
on a turbo note, you can remove the exhaust side of the turbo and check for oil.
If your burning oil post turbo, there will be oil in the down pipe.
It might be sludgy, but it will be there.
I'm not sure if you can reach the impeller with the EBPV in there though.
My turbo had the exhaust side seal go bad, but the intake seal was fine.

thanks for all the help guys. DZL JIM you nailed it i got some scotchbrite and cleand the tips really good and sure enough hair line crack running from one side up over the top and clear down the other side. man that crack was hard to find. injectors only have 2/m so they are sending new one free of charge. thanks again for all the help.

sorry jiveturkey, you can barely see the crack with naked eye. The tip had to be cleaned with a scotch brite pad to even show up. The best I can tell you is it was a hairline crack that went from the copper washer on one side up to the tip and all the way down the other side. It was very hard to find.
