Twice now I've had leaks in tires at the wheel weights, not new weights but at least 4-5 years old. When I had it repaired the guy said it was a known issue with Ford trucks but I didn't find anything when I searched the forums.
Is this something I'm just going to have to deal with or is there a way to have the weights placed that lessens the problem?
It sounds like you need to find a new tire shop. There is no problem with air leaks caused by wheel weights unless they break the tire bead and let air escape.
Never heard of anything like that either. But lets get scientific here. Which kind are you using that are being claimed to cause leaks, clip on or stick on?
I have seen this happen but what kind of shop are you using? This usually happens when the shop will reuse old wheel weights instead of using new ones. They get bent or they are using the wrong wheel weights. (Steel wheel or Aluminum wheel, ect. ) Poor workmanship on shops behalf. Or laziness on technicians. Either way par for the coarse is to find a new shop.
The weights are the clip on kind. They were on the truck when I bought it (2006) so I have no idea where they were done but the problems didn't start happening till a few years later.
The shop that said it was a known issue is actually a well known tire shop in my area, they've been around for a long time and have a great reputation. They only repaired the leak, which has held fine. The new leak is in a different tire.
