ya that roof coating sticks around forever. spilled some on my back poarch 20yrs ago, it's still there. weather doesn't effect it.

sounds like you're on the right track with your truck, i doubt you can really go wrong whatever you do. personally when it comes to tires i like the taller the better. 31's should look good. 2 tones are good. post some pics when you get started. and good luck with the truck.

I got 10.5X31 tires on my 87 Ranger with stock suspension. You can even go bigger than that on your full size 4X4. Nice truck and welcome.

Hey looks like yours is only in slightly better shape than mine. I dont even know if mine will start. Got to put the instrament cluster back in it then see if it will run. Thanks for posting pics and have fun. Got home from work tonight and put a better door on the drivers side. Door is less rusty and still somewhat functional. Let me know how yours is going.

yeah its an old desoto sitting out there ha ha. theres also a sixty six galaxie across the street.

it WAS running awesome, real strong and no hiccups, then i adjusted the idle and (i think) made the mistake of putting some marvel mystery oil in with the gas. then later that night i went to start it and she wouldn't run. this morning i went out and she started after some hesitation, but it wasn't a good idle, and then slowly died.

so..... i went out and got some super premium to add in with the other gas, and shot the carb with some starting fluid thinking i diluted the gas, or maybe blasted a piece of something out and it was inhibiting ignition. but it still wouldn't start, practically killed the battery. so i gave it a charge, and now the starter won't even kick on, i turn the key and it gives that droning sound.

out of ideas.... any one know something i could do?

well i'm an even worse mechanic than i am a body man but i think that mystery oil stuff is supossed to go in the crank case not the gas tank. if so you might want to drain the tank but i've never used it so can't really say. as for your porblem with the starter/battery i can't help much there either but it doesn't sound serious. pbly bad battery or alternator/generator or starter going bad. if someone doesn't chime in try posting a specific question here or over on slick60's.

bump.

First...if the starter won't turn over, it's not the gas, and if the battery won't take a charge, it's probably toast. Take it to an auto parts house and have them test it for you.

After you get that straightened out, then you can address the fuel issue. Typically, adding something like Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas does nothing more than make the vehicle smoke like crazy and run a little rough, so I have my doubts that this is your trouble, however if you added too much, you might've fouled a plug.

So...it certainly wouldn't do any harm, to drain the gas (from the tank and the carburetor bowl), clean your spark plugs and then give it another shot at starting.

It would also be a good time to replace your fuel filter if you haven't done so in a while.

the issue is resolved now, and its running good again. i definitely think the marvel knocked some kind of junk loose somewhere along the fuel line, and it clogged up the works a bit. i took the fuel filter off and it was pretty funky in there. new one this week when i do the tune up. as for the starter, after i fooled with the filter and sprayed up the carb real good, i just nailed it a couple times with a deadblow mallet, got in the truck and it started. some hesitation at first on the ignition end of things, but after i ran some of that fuel mixture through, she was runnin' like a champ. i'll get a new starter with the whole deal too. i really need to switch this thing over from points, not really sure what i wanna switch over to. has anyone ever used the electronic ignition upgrade that just mounts under the original distributer set up?

btw, i've added marvel mystery oil to my fuel in almost every vehicle i've owned, lawn mowers and tractors too, and can testify to the fact that its quieted lifters, improved fuel consumption, and idle.... theres just a formula you have to follow for the amount of fuel in your tank. how it works, i don't know, but it just does.

I run Marvel Mystery Oil through my old cars when I put them in storage for longer than six months. When I do it, I mix it in with the gas, but I've seen my grandad and my dad just pour a bit down the carb while it's running....not enough to kill it, but enough to make it run rough and smoke like crazy.

I'm not 100% sure that it's really doing anything other than making me feel good, by they both swore by it....and it never seemed to do any harm.
