Rod on FX4 tailgate

Rod on FX4 tailgate
Can anyone inform me as to the purpose of the metal rod in the lower passenger side of my 2010 FX4's tailgate? I see this rod on the FX4s & FX2s. By the way it appears my bumper step was scratched when my tailgate was put on from this rod.

It's on my 2006 as well. It appears to me that this is a stop of somesort. It just barely makes contact with the cutout in the bed lip just as the tailgate supports/cables reach their limits. There might be more to it, but I cannot determine what that would be.
