The 7th Sense............
A Sad Announcement:
Today we mourn the passing of an old friend, Common Sense.
Common Sense lived a long life, but died in the United States from heart failure on the brink of the new millennium.
No one really knows how old he was, since his birth records were lost long ago in bureaucratic red tape. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes, and factories, helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness.
For decades, petty rules, silly laws, and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, and that life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second. A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common
Sense survived cultural and educational trends including body piercing, Whole language, and "new math." But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus.
In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of well intentioned but overbearing regulations. He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies.
Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition.
It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parent when a female student was pregnant or wanted an abortion.
Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from the Boy Scouts to professional sports.
When a woman, too stupid to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, was awarded a huge settlement, Common Sense threw in the towel.
As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments regarding questionable regulations such as those for low flow toilets, rocking chairs, stepladders and auto emissions.
Common Sense finally succumbed when, while the United States was fighting a war on terrorism, a federal judge declared the Pledge of Allegiance to be unconstitutional.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers: My Rights, and Ima Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
Thank FTE User "Mantta" for this.
I done talked to common's folks the other day, and they tol' me he was hiding out because he was worried that a whole bunch of the "COMMON STUPID" clan was coming after him.
It seems everywhere he went - people were parked in the middle of the road, to talk to their friends even as they talked to other people farther away on the cell phone...
Other things similar to this led to "COMMON" eventually biting his tongue (since nobody seemed to want to listen, or they just paid lip service for a moments worth of seeming cool) and went on being dang fools...)
COMMON SENSE is now an UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT, we hope to preserve it wherever and howsoever we can, but we recognise the fact that there is in existance a MORON MAJORITY MOVEMENT in this country as well as elsewhere that we can only hope perishes through their own stupidity.
And it's lookin' like it might happen any day now - what with the nations out there who seem willing to turn a blind eye to the obvious acts of nihilists in the world today.
But what the heck!
We didn't need France in World War II anyway...
God speed, god bless, and don't git yor powder wet...

I see him daily, actually. He is usually the guy getting mugged by the dude holding the sign on the off-ramp...but sometimes I see him get hit by the guy leaving the bar parking lot. Poor guy.
Rumors of his death are exaggerated, but not by much. I need to find him and introduce him to my girlfriend before he slips back into obscurity...
Great Post, by the way!

What is "COMMON" out there is anything but sensible - so whatthe heck should it be called now?
(worried)
Many others near and far were taught by their parents, churches, and society the same lessons and we once were plentiful.
Then came the feel good Politically Correct (PC) movement, and the constant TV advertising of we "deserve a break today" followed rapidly by the breakup of the Nuclear Family (Mother AND Father).
Add to the mix a rapidly changing employment situation that had a third of the country moving frequently chasing jobs. Soon NEIGHBORHOODS were not groups of similar people who were concerned what one another thought. In fact today a neighbor is more likely to have the OPPOSITE concern.
Then we have Ultra Liberals who gravitated to the universities so they could Poison the minds of the young immediately after they were socially promoted through high school where they learned very little about the harsh realities of COMPETETIVE life.
Fortunately we have this wonderful thing we are currently communicating with (these forums) and through it we see HOPE.
The hope that is warming my soul right now, though many of us here at FTE frequently disagree on many general subjects......
WE ALL, every one of us, read the post of the death of Common Sense and felt the very same, made similar comments, and even added to the discussion.
Through these posts I saw MUCH common sense and truly believe as long as some of us have it, that we also have the power to raise the level of common sense in the community, neighborhoods, schools, and ultimately the nation.
Of course this requires we start respecting each other, taking responsibility for our actions, and the hardest part: Not allowing non-sense to prevail.
