Need some Advice on purchase!!

Hey guys it's been along time, but I need a superduty again. I've been working on jeeps lately but I'm currently on the hunt for a power stroke. I got two lined up to look at:
1. 2005 f-250 ecsb with 96k miles. Immaculate shap, lariat 4x4 with egr delete kit, 4" magnaflow exhasut, afe intake, SCT tuner (all not installed but comes with it). Leather but no heated seats, going to have to figure out how to add heat!!
Asking 19999. Flexible on price

2. 2002 f-250 ecsb 7.3 lariat 111k miles has TS chip, 4DP into 5 into 5 stacks, level kit, new tires, gauges on pillar, great shape, few dents, all service records. Has heated seats!
Asking $15,000. Firm on price

Not sure which one to go for. I like the 05 for the looks and ride, but the 6.0 scares me. What ya think?

Thanks

Personally, I would go with the 05. Ford made a lot of improvements to the 6.0L after the initial run. I just purchased an 03 with 100K. Little bugs came with it, but the motor runs good. It all depends on the care provided by the previous owner. My 2 cents. Good luck on your purchase!

I know two people who bought 6.0 PSD's that had just over 100,000 miles on them. Within two months of purchase they each dumped over $5,000 into them because of the head gaskets (one broke a head).

Fewer miles per year, new tires, heated seats and SERVICE RECORDS for $5,000 less than the 6.0? That would be my choice.

The owner of the 2005 just emailed me said he can get maintence records. He also said the believes the head gaskets have been changed. His friend is a ford mech as well and reflashed the pcm with the newest flash. I asked about his maintence he said he cleans the EGR every other oil change. So he must seem to know something about PSD.

On another note. My friend wants to sell me his '05 ccsb lariat with every options offered. Has 101k miles (just enough to kill the vehicle loan). Says it runs fine. Asking $20k. Ugh!

I like the idea of the new coils and quieter 6.0. But as far as performance and fuel economy goes. What is better 7.3 or a properly mondifyied (EGR DELETE, head studs, ect) 6.0?

Thanks again guys!

You didn't say whether the 6.0 has a head stud upgrade? This is a tough choice & you would probably do OK with either one but given the mileage on the 02, I would probably have to go with that one. Many successful 6.0's on the road but walk into my local dealership & there are a couple of cabs up in the air at any given time.

Also just found out that the HPOP or turbo pedastol is leaking on the 02... this sound like a common problem? Hard fix?

Do you guys think these trucks are priced right? I'm starting to lean towards the '05 for the ride and the interior styling. I know the 7.3 is a much better engine but leaf springs and the interior kind of make it a deal breaker. Monthly payments would be about the same for me. And the lesser miles is always nice.

How hard is it to add heat to the seats?

Is the 2005 at a dealership? I would talk them down a couple thousand and use that 2k to purchase an aftermarket warranty.

Find yourself a "helpful Ford dealership" and prior to the warranty expiring make sure and have head gasket problems. Take advantage of the warranty company paying labor and have head studs installed at the same time....

Just an idea.

The 6.0 has a lot more get-up than the 7.3 and is a great motor until it breaks...

Also, adding heated seats can be done for about $150 if your doing the labor yourself, would run you around $350 - $400 to have it done.

Is the 02 at a dealer? If so, the hpop is a good bargaining point. Get him to fix it or knock off what it would cost to have it fixed.
The 05 may be ok but without a warranty on the engine, you could be out some serious cash.
I would definitely go with the 02

If the '05 has the EGR delete and a head studs I would lean towards that truck.

You asked ,and by no means am I an expert on this but if I was spending my money again I would and will in the future be very cautious of any 6.oL. Make up a cooling system pressure test "kit" ,and put it on. It takes less than 10 minutes to put on. Take the truck on a test ride ,and run it up some hills. If you see a drastic pressure rise ,drop it where you found it. If the owner refuses to let you see the cooling system is in good shape then " I myself " would think there is something to hide. The newer trucks do ride great but will get your pocket book if you don't do some research. If I would have known about that little gauge set up a very short time ago I would be saving some $$$$

Good luck

well the '05 sold! So that is out of the question. I still am very interested in the 02, but I have to wait until the jeep WK sells to have a decent down payment. I did find another diesel... might get flamed, but always wondered about them, 2006 crew short gmc duramax sle (loaded) that was in great shape, one owner, with 100k miles for 20k. They ride so nice! and are super quite. But i don't know anything about duramaxes and the allisons. I'm thinking the lesser payment and the 7.3 would still be my best bet. But ext cab vs crew cab might be the down side! haha Thanks for all the info guys!
