Hello guys,
I've got a 1988 2WD F-250. My question regards its engine, an EFI 300 6 in-line.
The engine started missing past the 3000 RPM, then the problem worsened. Now it misses throughout the RPM range and is really bad. Right before this, the truck died and apparently it was the fuel pump that had given up.
Fuel pump was changed and fuel injectors were cleaned and the problem went back to what it was before... (missing throughout the RPM range)
I changed distributor cap and rotor, I also installed an old coil I had put away when I installed the MSD coil I currently have and nothing happened... problem is still the same. I decided to look under the hood in the dark and I can see current being drawn below the coil (happened with both coils) I can also see current running on cable that goes to cylinder#6; I changed the cable and the same thing happened. I inspected each one of the spark plugs, torque, and their gap too (0.044).
Should I change all the 2-year old 8.2 Taylor Thunderbolt cables and install a brand new coil?
Is there anything else I should try before?
Try moving the spark plug wires to different cylinders. If the problem moves, then you know its the wire, if it doesnt than its not. One thing to check off the list.
Check the plugs closely, on my 95 I6 the porcelain separated from the metal collar/threaded portion on 3 separate occasions, allowing the collar to vibrate and spin out of the head, while the spark plug wire held the porcelain steady.
The simplest idea is usually the best... Coming to think about it... I think the problem stays on #6 cylinder. I will make sure and do what you're suggesting. Thanks! (I will also inspect the spark plug)
Do you think this would cause the current below the coil I mentioned before?
What do you mean you can see current? Do you mean arcing? if you do, replace any wires that arc, they are not insulating the current from the metal around them.
If it's arcing, then that is the cause for the misfire. Replace your spark plug wires INCLUDING the coil wire and you'll likely have a smooth running engine again.
Try using std Motorcraft wires, they might be a bit spendy, but likely last longer then cheaper aftermarket wires.
i am having the same problem, but i changed wires plugs twice, cap rotor, checked the ing mod on dist, plus changed the timing chain because it acted like jumping time, set timing dead on and no luck hard to start and miss like crap, i am at the end of my rope. i am starting to think one of the cats are stopped up because this truck has two cats and glass pack and it is as quiet as a new truck,
plus i have never seen where two pipes in to one cat then 3 feet away from that cat another cat then 2 feet away a glass pack,
oh i also have a craked exhaust manifold now
any one have any ideas what the heck is the deal with this thing
