Ok 04 6.0L diesel excursion. What belt is everyone running?
The belt for the Excursion is a different length than the f-250's. Anyone know why? I am having a belt squeal problem (I posted up in the 6.0 section https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ensioners.html) but I keep going back to it looks like it is the belt. So far I am on my second Gates Micro-V and they last about 30-45 days before they start squealing! Thinking of trying the Gatorback. A mechanic friend that works on the 6.0 likes the Gatorbacks better than the Motorcraft's. Wish I would of talked to him before I bought my first Gates belt, the second one was warranty. Everything on the truck has been looked at. The only thing that quiets the belt is bar soap on the ribbed side of the belt. That will quiet it for a little while. the longer I run the bar soap the longer it will be quite.
Already did the tensioner, no change. changed the idler pulleys, no change. bought a mechanics stethoscope, listened to every item on the belt, hear nothing.
While not a diesel, I have had no problems running Gatorback belts. What is the dome light mod?
I installed a switch that I can turn off the interior dome lights when a door is open. We travel a lot and mostly at night so the kids sleep and this way when we swap drivers I can turn off the dome lights and not wake the kids. Easy mod and a great write up is in this forum. if you can't find it let me know and I'll try and find it again for you.

Great info. My '97 Tahoe had an override switch to do this as standard equipment - I loved it.
I could have the doors open for loading/unloading and not attract bugs @ night. Will add to my to-do list.
reps to you!
EDIT: once I've spread the love around, urghhh
You may want to turn each pulley manually when the belt is off to see which one is binding up, if any. If one feels tight to turn, then that may be the one causing it?
Before you install a new belt where the old was squealing you can also clean all of the pulleys. It sometimes doesn't take much to contaminate a new belt - coolant, oil, power steering fluid come to mind. If any belt dressing was ever used I'd certainly clean all residue off before the new installation. Are you losing any fluids at all? Mine had a slight noise at first startup and it was a bit of surface rust on the idler pulley. Easy swap and a new Gates (Carquest blue) belt and it's been quiet for about 18 months.
I thought about the water pump pulley but that runs on the smooth side of the belt, I am having problems with the ribbed side.
I looked at all the pulleys and they look good. The belts last about 30-45 days before they start to squeal. But I will clean the pulleys before the install of the new belt. Thanks for the heads up. I do have a little bit of oil seapage but nothing that drips on the floor.?.?
Good luck with the belt, I cleaned all the pulleys also, it ended up the idler pulley was going and and the water pump was going bad also, it's not the belt that causes the squealing, it's the mechanical parts that go bad, just keep an eye on the edges of the belt and look for small amounts of chafing, if the pulleys start to wear even a little it will rub the edge off the belt, when you had the belt off did you grab the water pump pulley and try wiggle it to see if there was any play? I went thru three belts in a couple of weeks and then the water pump almost fell off.
The belt can definitely cause squealing - as it slips on surfaces it will make the noise. If you have any shiny surfaces on the belt it means it has glazed - that glazing is caused by heat and slippage. Improper tension (belt tensioner bad), chemicals on the belt and slipping on a failing component can all lead to the problem.
