It is very easy to shorten your antenna. I have shortened the antenna on the last two F250's. Use a good pair of cutters or air saw. You and taper the end and reinstall the ball cap. The ball cap comes off the section you removed easily and if you scratch it you can paint with flat black paint.
At risk of irritating the search police, I'm going to go ahead and answer...
I'm getting about 1750 mpg at the moment.
The first time I added DEF I bought the Motorcraft DEF but it cost me $9.63/gallon so I won't be doing that again. Only time I'll use Motorcraft DEF is when I go get my free fill.
After that I bought DEF at O'Reilleys for $5.23/gallon.
Some Pilot stations have pump dispensers. I haven't seen one yet but folks on here have been using them and that is the cheapest way to get it if you have one around. I'm pretty sure the DEF pumps will start showing up at more and more places as time goes by.
The short answer is you don't have to use Motorcraft DEF anymore than you have to use Motorcraft oil.
The nearest Pilots with DEF are about 350 miles east and west of me, so that doesn't happen very often. Most of the Pilots with DEF pumps seem to be in the southeast and midwest so far, but I'm sure they'll be expanding rapidly to other areas.
And I've been boycotting O'Reilly's until they start carrying parts for my '56 Pontiac 316 V8 again. Like that's gonna happen. I'm also boycotting NAPA until Echlin does another production run of distributor rotors for Continental Y-91 engines. Yeah, I like lost causes.
Hey, I like my antenna at it's present height, It lets me know if I'll clear when I drive into the under ground parking garages. If the antenna makes it, I'm good.
Almost all truck stops offer DEF in Gallon or 2.5 gallon jugs much cheaper than Ford sells it for.
Painted Horse,
I like your answer about the underground parking garages. I try to stay out of them and I go into my garage a lot more often than under ground parking garages so I shortened mine. To each his own. I don't like taking a crew cab long box into tight places unless I have to.
I try to avoid it as much as possible. But every once in a while I have to pull into one of those place. As a builder, I insist on using 8' tall garage doors. So the garage doors are never an issue unless the trucks are lifted. And lifted trucks will never make into a public parking garage
I have not yet found any of the DEF in retail stores to have a different mix. I'm sure it's out there, but there is an accepted standard that they all follow. I pay $12 per 2.5gal jug at my local O'Reilly.
My stock antenna slaps the concrete girders as I go through my parking garage here at work. I have about 2" of clearance on everything but the antenna. It must be like 4" taller than the truck
I have not found any other DEF formula either. I have looked at or purchased DEF at every major auto parts supplier, all the major truck stops, my local Speedway gas station, the Pilot truck Stop dispenser and at the Ford dealer. All have been the same basic 68/32 mix.
I buy 2.5 GAL jugs of BlueDEF (API certified ISO-22241-1) at O'Rilley's and I think those are $11.95 or so each.
^^^^ True ^^^^ Just bought 2 jugs at Orielly's cost me $25 out the door. Took it to the dealer and had them poor it in - not because i'm lazy but it just worked out that way 'cause I stopped by to pick up some coolant test strips. The diesel tech said nothing about the spec.
