I only have about 2500 mi. on a new engine. My Isky lifters tick/click like crazy at first start of the day. After about 5 minutes they quiet down. I have checked the v. adjustment and it is good.
Has anyone else had this problem? Should I replace them?
Thanks guys. Checked geometry and went with longer p.rods due to sbc longer valves.
By 'preload' do you mean v.adjustment prior to start, or does it refer to pumping oil through the system? Anyway, I did both of those.
And yes, I am using a thick 20/50 oil to maintain oil psi. After breaking in cam, I drove it home with 30 sae in it. Psi went from 50 at idle to 10 hot at idle.
The following morning at start it sounded like a a diesel the lifters were clicking so bad. Finally found the shop who reground the cam, supposedly to Isky 256 specs, had ground the base circles too small, and the lifters were dropping!! I changed the cam and lifters.
This was the second engine. The first had something wipe out the mains and rod bearings. Changed them and still the oil psi kept dropping. From this engine I took the Isky 256 cam and lifters, all in order, and installed in #2 engine. Now I'm wondering if something clogged a few of the lifters.
Maybe I'm missing something but I dont believe you should have to run thicker oil in a new motor to maintain good oil pressure.
I hope you didnt use the same oil pump from the 1st engine even if it was new.
If so that oil pump may have been what wiped out the rods and mains and is now working on your 2nd motor. Just guessing. I dont know what all you used over.
Both my 300s clattered like a diesel until warm. Never hurt anything. I run 10W30. The moral of the story it that I think they just clatter until warm.
