4.6l mod questions

Alright don't throw me on the grill, I know I'm beating a dead horse here, and I did a search, but didn't find my exact question.

My question is, why exactly does the 4.6 in our trucks seem so limited in performance mods? I owned a crown vic before and the CV guys did everything and anything to these motors, supercharged even. What exactly is limiting newer style F150 4.6 owners to do the same?

I've seen many conflicting post on 4.6 mods and I'd really love some clarification here

Thanks in advance

x2 on the edge

also if you look around there are plenty of performance mods for our trucks. you just need to look. you can get superchargers, turbos, cams, headers, nitrous kits, injectors, cop's, cranks and pistons, everything is out there. try jegs.com or jcwhitney.com

not sure about the crown vic but if it's like the mustang 4.6 it has different heads than the f150. Mustangs have Romeo heads and F150s have Windsor heads. Romeo heads have different valve cover bolt patterns and girdles that go over the cams. I know that really doesn't answer your question though. IMO the reason performance mods are lacking for the f150 4.6 is the fact that it has to move a ton of weight and that anyone looking for performance would already have the 5.4. The 4.6 is a great engine and yes they should make a supercharger for it!

Btw, Edge x3....plus free flowing exhaust and swaping gears will give you the most gains. 4.6 intake and cats are already good.

Also, didn't know this but the 4.0 v6 in the Mustang is the same 4.0 in the Ranger +/- a few HP, and there are superchargers available for that 4.0 in the Ranger. I learned something today. sweet

Hey Fox, I got mine right from Edge but I just checked Jcwhitney, Autoanything, Edge and Jegs and Jegs has the best price right now because they throw in the gauge pod. Here's a link: Edge Products 15051 Edge Products Ford Triton V8 Evolution Programmer with Monitor

I've already bought an Edge, and yes, after some custom settings using the level 2 "tow" tune, it definitely has more go. I've also switched to a dual exhaust setup, which added to it, but now I have to go back and add an x-pipe for even flow (should've done it the first time I know).

I'm not looking for a drag racer or anything, my 4.6 already proved it's worth after pulling a fullsize chevy on a trailer for 3 hours on different terrain. I just want a better answer than "should've bought a 5.4" It just amazes me that there's a bunch done to be had with these motors in other vehicles, but nothing for us F150 owners. I've been a Chevy guy 'til now though so what do I know?

Also quick question on the Edge, is it fine for my WOT shifts to be over 5000RPMs? I don't punch it much, but I've tried it a couple times and it definitely gets to going, but the motor's screaming at that point and I read they weren't meant to be pushed that high.

Hey, thanks! How much better does the throttle response get at part open?

One limitation of many of the performance mods on a smaller engine like the 4.6 is that they move the torque and horsepower peaks upward in the RPM range (cams, headers, intake mods, etc.) and that is not what you generally want for a truck. Definitely fine in a Mustang, and OK in a Crown Vic. I've put 91k miles on my stock 4.6 in a 5400 lb 2002 E150, and it will work its heart out.

A turbo or supercharger would certainly be of help in lower rpm ranges, and gears and a tuner will help for sure, but after a point, if you are seeking max performance and are willing to invest big bucks, you might well be better to swap either the engine or the truck for a 5.4 to get some useful low end grunt.

The 4.6 is 281 cubic inches, and I remember the day when the 283 Chevy engine was a "very small" V8. (And in the old days, I had a number of big block musclecars including 2 426 Mopar hemi cars, so I remember what serious torque was like.)

Good luck,
George

Fox, I've noticed that throttle response is much better when passing on the highway or interstate. I think what I like most about it is the smoother shifting and the fact that eliminates the lag between gears. Basically it's controlling the line pressure in the transmission. Especially nice when pulling a trailer. I was pulling a double axle auto transport trailer last year with a 4x4 86 Ranger on it and I could hardly tell I was pulling anything except when braking. The Edge lets you stay in the power band between shifts.

Also my mpg hasn't changed. I get around 16-18 in town and 20-21 on trips.

Fox, you may want to check out Power Hungry Performance (PHP) for the Edge converted to Gryphon.
Power Hungry Performance - Gryphon™
The "canned" tunes that come in the Edge are good, but a custom tune or two from PHP will really wake up the truck.
