Talking Speedo/Sensor Issue? HELP!

Well my 2000 F-350 is starting to act up and it's a first. The last couple weeks the speedometer needle has been going from one side to the other 0-100mph. Also the transmission is having shifting issues along with stalling. It will do it for a while then it will stop and return to normal sometimes. I replaced the OSS sensor on the top of the tranny recently with no improvement. Also I get no CHECK ENGINE lights or No O/D flashing lights. I checked for codes and found 720, 603, and 340 Diagnostic Trouble Codes. The Cam shaft position sensor was replaced about 12,000 miles ago for safety concerns. Could a sensor be defective? I hope MY BUDDIES at FTEF can help me get my truck back on the road.

I would have expected a flashing O/D Off light, but.....

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the rear differential is probably collected enough metallic "fuzz" to get erratic.

Pull it and clean off the black, ferreous "fuzz" and see what happens. Otherwise, replace it. It's about $25.

Find the wire that goes into the rear differential. That plugs into the VSS. A single bolt removal allows it to pull out of the diff housing.

I second that. It happened on my e99 couple years back and replacing it fix the problem.

Crazy Speedo Still

Well after changing the VSS senor in the rear axle and the OSS sensor on top of the transmission, my crazy acting speedometer/improperly shifting/stalling truck issues still continue. Could the front wheel sensors be a culprit that is being over looked? It all started one day when I took a (hard)right turn and my over sized tires rubbed the leaf springs and minutes after that the problems arose.

Nope. The front ABS sensors have nothing to do with the shifting logic.

There's still the Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor signal to look at.

Short of getting out an oscilloscope to look at that, or the VSS signal where it enters the PCM, I'm outta' ideas.

Doesn't the computer take readings from three speed sensors(minus the one in the tranny). If they are not close then couldn't that screw up the spedometer. I can see each wheel bearing speed sensor and the rear diff speed sensor with AE. I read somewhere about if they are not all reading the same it will screw things up.

If someone has AE around you you could see if the speed sensors are reading correctly.

The ABS system uses all three wheel sensors. If they don't agree, the ABS goes into action.

The calculated speed uses only the one in the differential.

BTW, there are TWO sensors in the trans, one on the goesinta, one on the goesouta.

Could the Superlift TruSpeed be the CAUSE?

I forgot to tell everyone I have a Superlift TruSPEED speedometer recalibrator installed on my truck. Do these units EVER FAIL and if they do, would it create the problems with my truck.

The Truspeed is wired in series with the speed sensor so the truspeed could be causing your problem. Could be a loose conection on the yellow or green wire that puts it in series. The truspeed also needs power. Do you have the install instructions. It would be easy to temporarily disconnect it.

Edit: Found the LINK for Truspeed installation

Is it soldered in...?? I would bet that is your problem.... I have seen a few of them cause some issues.

Just yesterday someone mentioned that they had one, and their original installer had just twisted wires together to do the installation.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...l#post10025220

He solved his problems with soldering and shrink-sleeving those connections.

I believe you are very close to pinning down your problem now.
