zf trans help

I have a zf trans out of a 97 f350 2wd , want to put it in my 96 f250 4wd can you bolt a tf case to the 2wd zf or do I need one from a 4wd? Thanks for the help.

You need one from a 4x4. I do not think converting one is easy. It may require a complete teardown, plus the parts.

Ok thanks , thought I might get away with just swapping tailshafts or some thing on 2wd model

I was in the same predicament last year. I even gathered the 4x4 tail housing and the main shaft and was ready to tear it down when i found a 4x4 zf5 to put in.

You could find a divorced t-case from an earlier truck such as a np205.

You should be able to just swap out the mainshaft and tail housing and bolt it in. I have yet to see one you can't.

What he said, but the cost of a tail housing and main shaft are going to cost you the same amount if not more than a 4wd zf
