I want to remove this hub and brake bracket assembly from the D44 front axle but it's not budging. I think I've loosened everything that needs to be loosened but have I missed something? thanks, just didn't want to break out the hammer too soon.
Screw one of the wheel bearing nuts back on. Then if you have a large deadblow hammer, whack it downwards on the nut.............should break it loose. You can use a regular hammer, but will need to be careful you dont hit the threads or hit it too hard.
No luck, wow. I can't believe these hubs are this stuck. This not a rusty truck at all, everything has come apart fine.
I checked the shop manual and it looks like I've removed and/or loosened everything I need to, any other tricks I missed to remove?
I'm afraid that if I wack this too much I'm gonna bend that hub.
Use a small cold chisel between the outer edge of the hub out by the studs and the brake rotor dust shield area. Tap a little in one spot then move to the opposite side and give a few hits then back and forth until it starts to seperate. That was the way I was tought by an old time Ford mechanic way back when. These things can be a B**ch to get off sometimes.
There fun to remove arent they? lol I applied a little heat in around the bolts, smacked it with a hammer on the face of the spindle and the used a chisel, eventually it came off.
LOL, amazing they are so stuck.
I did try a cold chisel around the edge plus I've used some PB Blaster to hopefully help the process. I'll also try the heat.
For sure, anti-seize will be used when the pieces go back together.
thanks for your help, looks like some patience with this is the ticket.
yup, I have, but careful not to hit towards the ends that actually support the caliper to avoid bending. I might be too careful lol.
My intent is to replace the front u-joints/bearings and also the seals, slight leak on one side. I discovered that the seals are on the inner part of the shafts.
Looks like this is the way to replace the seals. I was a bit concerned about removing the carrier, if there was a possibility of messing up the gear pattern, but looks fairly straightforward (provided I can get the hubs off lol). Dana 44 Axle Seal Replacement
thanks for the 4WD expertise, greatly appreciated.
success! exactly as mentioned, BFH and a cold chisel did the trick. I realized I wasn't smacking it hard enough and also that the round part of the hub is accessible from the back to help knock out the assembly.
Once I did the one side, the other side took about 3 minutes.
thanks all for your help. Now on to refurbish the seals/bearings.
