Tire size / gearing problems

Ok currently my 2010 has stock 245/??/17 cant remember and 373s. I want more gear but im not sure how much. My new idea is if i go 4.56 or 4.30 and decid its too much i can change tire size and make up for it.

So i change to 4.56, and add max diameter tire (34" or 35"?) what equivelent gear ratio would that put me at? Im happy with stock tires but i could go to 255/265 and taller if i need to. I dont want any lift or extensive mods to fit bigger

Current tires are 245/75/r17 bf goodrich rugged trail t/a i like them ok. Very quite been doing ok on snow. Problems are they pickup pebbles off dirt roads and then throw em off at highway speeds. Also ive gotten stuck a few times where i wouldnt with my old ranger but i think thats more a weight issue than tires.

I think these are much better than the continentals i hear everyone whinning about im glad my truck had em optioned for 125$

You have factory sized tires for a dually, which came with as deep as 4:30s on those trucks. I wouldn't play the game of changing gears, and if you don't like it change the tires, because if you don't like that, then you'll want to keep changing stuff. Take the time to figure out what you want, and go for that.

Here's a simple gearing calculator, just play around with it for awhile, you'll see what gearing and what sized tires to what to your RPMs and cruising speed.

Stock Tire Size = 31.5"
Stock Gear Ratio = 3.73

If you were to put a larger tire on the truck and keep your stock gear ratio, the ring and pinion ratio would feel much higher. Here's how it would feel.

Stock Tire Size = 31.5"
New Tire Size = 35"
Stock Gear Ratio = 3.73
Effective Ratio = 3.36

To return to a stock, you would need a 4.14 ratio. Obviously, that ratio is not available so the next closest ratio would be 4.10. BUT- the new tires are much heavier so the next step "up" would be 4.56. That ratio would make it feel more like it did stock.

Good luck!

Right now you have a stock 32" tire. IMO, with stock tires, the 5.4L should have minimum 4.10s and preferably 4.30s. If you step up to 35" tires, you'll need 9% more gear to compensate for the tire size change, that means instead of 4.10s or 4.30s, you're looking at 4.56s or 4.88s.

If you're not sure if you want to go all the way up to 35" tires, I'd do 4.30s, and if you want 35s, go with 3.56s.

Also take into account if you normally run highway or city and how fast you run on the highway. Here in Oregon, speed limit is 65, so I can get away with lower gears than someone that runs 75-80 often.

I have 1 70mph highway i drive but even now i dont like going over 75mph i just dont like going that fast.

So if i go 4.56 keep my current tires. Then if it is too much gear i can put a 33/34 tire and that would put me back 1/2 way to stock.

I went from 3.31 to 4.10 in my 08 mustang and absolutelynloved it but anything more would have been too much.

The thing thats killing me with 3.73 are; obviously accelration, top gear is useless most roads here are 55 and traffic goes 50-55 and i cant leave it in top gear because it wont hold speed at 50mph on a hill unless i floor it and at <1500rpm i dont lkke too. Finally i have 5 miles of dirt to get to the road and i like to go 25mph and im conetantly on 2-3 shift and usually just leave it reved 2000-2500 all five miles out so i have decent power. I think with 4.56 3rd would be nice for that driving 10minutes everytime i leave/come home.

If you're considering keeping your current tires, then I'd go 4.30s. With 35s, 4.30s will be stock ratio though, so you really need to figure out what size tires you want to run first.

I dont want big mudders. Probably 275 about as wide as id go and 34 or so high. I drive 15-20000 a year and is my only vehicle so i must keep it reasonable. Reason i traded the mustang is i modded it so much it was only fun driving 1/4 mile 12 seconds at a time. It was such a pain after a 3 hour trip i went to the dealership to buy this truck!

I'd go 4.30s, the 4.56s will be too low for smaller than 35s and it sounds like you'll just have a 33-34.
