I bought a project truck about two years ago. It had a lot of new parts on it looked like someone got stalled and couldn't finish it. When I got it I checked the brakes they looked like they had just been done new hardware ect. yesterday I felt a kind of pop when I hit the brakes. and they started pulling. I was not far from home so I just babied it home. When I pulled the front drums off. The driver side linings had come completely off of the shoe and the passenger side one of the shoes had big cracks running through it. What might cause this? The truck had been sitting for I don't know how long.
I have seen the cracking and the delamination of the shoes come from a couple conditions. One condition is over heating from a brake dragging or over braking. Another condition is a hot shoe getting wet going through a puddle of water when the shoes are hot. I am sure there are other causes.
I would suspect very low quality re-lining in this case. I would replace with lining from a reputable vendor such as NAPA or a name brand such as Raybestos or Bendix.
