I bought a project truck about two years ago. It had a lot of new parts on it looked like someone got stalled and couldn't finish it. When I got it I checked the brakes they looked like they had just been done new hardware ect. yesterday I felt a kind of pop when I hit the brakes. and they started pulling. I was not far from home so I just babied it home. When I pulled the front drums off. The driver side linings had come completely off of the shoe and the passenger side one of the shoes had big cracks running through it. What might cause this? The truck had been sitting for I don't know how long.
How does the inside of the drum look? The only things I could think of would the glue that holds the pad to the shoe came loose either from age and heat or manufacturer defect, but I would assume the first since the other side has cracks in it. The strangest thing I have ever had happen was the front drum split in two so I had a shallow drum and a loose ring rattling behind my wheel
the drums look great no checking no blue tinge from heat, no brake fluid more dust on the side that came all the way off but that's it. I replaced the wheel cylinders and shoes on the front. haven't chekced the back yet. I haven't got the front off my jack stands yet.
I don't know if they are, or not, for your vehicle. What I'm wondering is if the glue just dry-rotted over the years they were sitting.
Also, there might be some intentional engineering going on where they expect that the glue will get hot and "cure", as long as it's a short time before being applied and actually used.
thanks for the feedback. It was a bit weird. thought I would investigate. The fact that they may not have been broken in makes as much sense as anything else.
