I have a 1995 f350, 7.3 Power stroke, it does different things like cuts of at red lights sometime, engine light comes on very seldom but goes back out. The main problem is if i fail to plug it up it starts blowing huge amounts of white smoke until it warms up then it runs ok but anytime i'm on the freeway right before it shifts from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th its like it bogs down and a steady stream of same smoke starts, i let up and it straightens out most of the time but starts to skip, sometimes it runs great but sometimes sitting still it jumps like a john deere. Scanner code says its the icp sensor, how do i check or can i to make sure thats what it really is before purchacing that little piece of gold from ford?. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
easiest way to check the icp is simply unplug it, its on the front of the driver side head, a white circle coming out of the head with a 3 prong pig tail on it. unplugging this forces the PCM into stock calibrations on a "best guess" so it may run a little funny but in your case it may run better. there about 170$ at ford, so be sure its gone before buy it!
it was a snapon scanner updated.Do I need to go back and scan again to get the code? As I was saying before the code referred back to the icp could that read wrong or could it be something else causing that code to appear myself I don't know. Thank You
the sensor is bad if it has oil in it but that is the least of your problems. Was that code IPC circuit low by any chance? It should have run smooth by unplugging it if it was just the sensor. You are losing high pressure oil somewhere and need to go through the diagnostic checklist to find out where. It could be the HPOP, injector o rings, plugs in the head......
My guess would be injector o rings but it's only a guess without going through all the tests on it. They are more common than the HPOP going bad and will explain the bad smoke you describe.
Please don't ever use ether again. It's better just to park it till you fix it.
If you replace the o rings then also replace the glow plugs since you did that. And I'd recommend diagnosing the glow plug system by reading the sticky at the top of the main page here on hard starts.

My wag , you have an intermittent problem ,It's it not the HPOP ,Its not the o rings it is more than likely an electrical problem .. If the ICP is leaking you need a new one ...
Then , get the truck on a PSD capable scanner & get some real time data.. Code scanners are worthless ...
