Well boys I've really started to think hard about buying this unit. I can get it for roughly $3000 dollars. Since I plan to use my Ford 460 for a daily driver and am opening up the bank account to make this truck just what I want I figured I may as well go all the way. With the expectations for an increase in gas prices it will only make since. I drive between 10,000-20,000 miles in a year. I ran it on a variety of mpg points. At 8 mpgs I will use 1250 miles in a year. At $3.50 a gallon I will use $4,375 dollars of fuel in a year. At 10 mpgs I will use 1000 gallons a year at $3.50 a gallon I will use $3,500 a year in fuel. At 12 mpg I will use 833 gallons a year $2,916 The PO got 10 towing no matter the weight and 12 empty unloaded with the 4 speed. So I use the 10 mpg as a baseline for not knowing what my truck will be doing with the mods. I'll calculate 20k miles a year too At 8 mpgs I will spend $8750 a year in fuel At ten I will spend $7000 a year in fuel At 12 mpgs I will spend $5832 a year So lets say for fun I get 10 miles a gallon baseline at 10k a year. I will spend $3,500 per year based upon the Gear Vendors expected increase of 20% that will drop my cost to $2,916 which is a savings of $584 a year. At 30% increase I will save $808 a year. Now driving 20k which is about right I will save $1168 at 20%, and at 13 I save 1616. Just for fun by some miracle say I get 16 mpgs I will save $4375 a year (unit pays for it self). I will save $1313 at 10k a year, (1/2 payoff) So it does appear to make sense as far as a monetary aspect, I spend almost all my time driving on the road. I drive about 18,420 a year already just between home and college, and my other school. I already spend about $5k a year in gasoline with my current 4x2 v6 dodge ram. Anyway, I just ran the data and was hoping that someone else could chime in here before I drop down the cash for something like this. I think especially so with a 4speed and 35 inch tires with a 460 and 4.10 gears this would help out immensely. My ideal situation would be a half price unit for my t-19 I watch quite frequently and have funds reserved especially for this purchase but it doesn't come up much.
I have a 1971 F250 4x4 with a 460 and a np435 4spd and i have a Ranger Torque Splitter in it. It has been in the truck for almost 20 years now with no issues. It mounts in between the Transmision and the bellhousing. The nice thing about it is it can also be used as an aux-tranny to split the gears at any point in time thus giving you 8 forward gears and technically 2 reverse gears. It is either available in a 27% overdrive or a special order 17% overdrive. The best part is it will only run you $1,400-1,500. Just thought id let you know about that option.
They are out of business. Some jagaloon purchased them scrapped all the tooling, and parts are no longer available. Man I would pay lots of dollars to get one of these suckers though. Don't really want to pay $3k but would shell out $1500 from my designated fund for this purpose. Any idea what kind of mpgs you pull down with it?
ETA maybe I was thinking of the wrong one as I found several places offering this. Boy this sure may be what I was looking for. How hard was to install it? I also love the additional lever I like having lots of buttons, switches, and levers to mess with. Keeps the driving fun!
I got the truck from my grandpa and he said he was getting 10-12 out of his mildly built 460 (big cam, big carb, and a bunch of timing). I believe (because of a goole search) that you can get one from advanced adapters through summit racing. Its a good unit ive had 1.5-2 yards of sand in the back of the truck and it didnt complain a bit while splitting the gears. My grandpa used to tow a big airstream to eastern oregon with the truck and it didnt have any issues then iether.

Wow its like Christmas here! I am pretty stoked I found something in my budget range and appears to do exactly what I want. I noted you lived in Scappose, I figured you did prior to you updating your profile info . Have you checked out the Oregon chapter here? Lots of great guys in there. Lastly, what are the chances that I could come out and take a look at your ranger unit if I ever make it over that way? I see them on the internet but its not really the same as visualizing them.

No i didnt know there was a chapter around here. I just got on the forum to get some ideas for my 4.6 swap but ended up finding tons of usefull info and some pretty great people to talk to. As far as looking at the ranger im sure it could be aranged (the truck had the motor pulled a year ago but events have lead to it going back in) I plan on having it running in a month or so (whenever i get a brake in the wheather, haha) then you could see how it functions. Plus i need somethin to drive other than a damn suburban (it kills me on gas has a 350/4spd).

If you are working with a 4x4 then it requires moving the trans crossmember back, shortening the rear driveline, and lengthening the front. Its the same for a 2wd minus the front driveline. Also the shifters will have to be moved back. And yes extra levers and buttons are a lot of fun, haha.
Good deal. Well depending on whats going on here at college and with my state fire training I may be able to make it over and help ya swap in the motor? That would be the best of both worlds for me. Just have to see how everything works out. I am really thinking I may buy one of these though. Would you say it sucks to shift in and it vibrates bad, combined with loud noise? Just a few complaints I've heard.
Mine didn't have any vibrations and was fairly easy to shift. It was noisy though. The noise didnt really bother me though after the noises that came out of the tranny in a 76 i had i dont think much can. haha. Where abouts do you go to college at?
That isn't a problem. Trucks are supposed to be noisy lol. I go to OSU, but live in Eastern Oregon when I am not at my apartment in Corvallis. Don't really care much for Corvallis, but whatever gets me the degree I guess lol.
Another plus for the Ranger Splitter as opposed to the Gear Vendors o/d, is that the Ranger is much more stout.
The Gear Vendors unit is based on a Volvo car overdrive, and is NOT designed for the heavy duty usage that it is marketed for.
The Ranger is an all-gear transmission.
The Gear Vendors unit uses clutches and friction material, and is more like an automatic transmission in design. When (not if) it needs rebuilt, the work costs nearly the same as the initial price of the unit, and GV is the only place that will rebuild them.
