I went in to get an alignment done today and the tech noted that my pitman arm had some vertical movement (which he showed me) and my lower ball joints needed replacing.
The picture below shows where the vertical movement was.
-Would a new pitman arm cure this?
-Anyone have a link to a DIY article?
-Does anyone have a suggestion for a specific puller they would suggest?
Thanks in advance for the great help I always get here.
that joint could be bad. i would think the pitman would be good.
I agree - the joint seems to have the movement. What would cause a pitman arm to need to be replaced? It seems like a bulletproof piece of metal with no moving parts...
I'd say it's the outer tie rod end. I'm pretty sure drag link is just another word for it. You'd really have to do something nasty to bend the pitman arm. Do you hear a clunk at all when turning, my guess is you can't over the diesel. I had this problem in my Jeep, but my bushing on the tie rod was in much worse shape. The bad bushing made my steering sloppy and clunk when I turned. It was pretty simple to replace in my Jeep but the end was pretty seized in there. You might need a lot of PB Blaster.

Yes, I do hear a clunk when turning. I think its only when I make a right turn, but I could be mistaken.
Yeah the clunking is from the play in the bushing. From the video it really doesn't look bad, but if you hear the clunking then it might need to be replaced. Mine was to the left, but again a different vehicle. If anything the bushing on there is probably shot. The ones on my Jeep were not serviceable and I wouldn't think the Super Duty ones are but I could easily be wrong there. A quick google search gave me this.
