PATS Ignition Key Programing Question

So my question is i have two factory keys and wanted a spare key. I found in a thread in the forum that if you have two keys you can program a third key. I got a key cut from a loacl locksmith and tried the following (To program a new key, put the first working key in the ignition and turn it to the on position for a second and back and remove key. (don't start the engine) Next, put the second working key in and turn it to the on position for a second and back and remove. Next put the new key in and turn it to the on position for a second and back. Wait about 15 seconds and the key should be programmed to start the vehicle.) But when i tried the new key my EX would on crank but not start. Not sure what im doing wrong. Does anyone have any sugestions? Or am i out of $35. I can atleast use the key to unlock the doors if i lock my keys in the EX but it would be nice to have a spare that actually work. Thanks for any help.

Not sure which directions you're following, but follow these directions to the letter and it will program a blank key for you.

1. Place first already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) for at least 1 second and then switch to off

2. Within 5 seconds, insert the second already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

3. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to OFF, insert the new key into the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

The theft indicator light should go on for three seconds, after which the key will start the vehicle.

That is the correct procedure to program a third key. I think there is a maximum number of keys that can be programmed...but not 100% sure. If that is the case, you may need to have it reflashed at the dealer?

Someone else can chime in on this.

Yea, you can have up to 8 programmed before needing a reflash. Sometimes you get bum keys also.

I only had one key, and ended up buying 2 from locksmith. Had ford program them while I had it in for cruise control issues. Only 1 of the new keys programmed. I ended up going back to locksmith and he replaced key. Still couldn't get is programmed. Replaced again and still no program. Locksmith gave up on the issue and wouldn't replace any more. I ordered one from ebay, and was able to program it, no issues, and then for some silly reason I was able to get the other key that was giving me issues to program. Go figure, so now I have 4 good keys. 3 at home and 1 hidden in the truck,(no you will not find it easily) in case I'm away from home and lose the keys.

Hiding one hidden outside the truck is the best thing you could do to insure getting in or having an authorized person get in. I have always had a spare key hidden and it gives me great assurance.

Thanks for the help.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. And that i followed what Stewart H recommended on how to program the key and it worked perfect. The post i found and tried first was saying to wait till the theft light went out each time. That didnt work. But when i followed what Stewart recommened it works perfect. Thanks again Stewart and everyone else for the help. I much appreciate it and im sure i will have more question in the future. I have only had my Ex a few months and look forward to owning it for many years to come. Even with the outragous fuel prices. LOL

p.s LoleUiha i got the key from a local locksmith. The key brand name and part # is ( ilco p/n=H72-PT )

Great thread! Hoping to get more keys as I have just one!
Found an Ebay seller that can actually cut the keys for $2.50 from an approved photo image.
I sent him some images.Hope its a go!

I am in the same boat as you. I only have 1 key for my X and would like to get a few spares. Unfortunately, my understanding is that you must have 2 working keys to be able to program the 1 that you have. If you only have 1 key, then you must take it to the dealer. Can anyone confirm this? I would rather not have to spend that money if I can avoid it.

A good local locksmith should have the technology/ability to program a new, or delete a lost key from your PATS, as long as you have a single working key. You can not program a second key yourself.

Many hardware stores can even do them nowadays. Ace did mine.

Ace may have cut it for you but how do they program it?
I heard it costs about $100 to have a key programmed at the Ford dealer!
