I must own a miracle vehicle. I've got an old beat up 96 E250 cargo van 5.8L/E4OD and it pulls down a 18-20mpg empty. Oh and it also has 220,000 miles on it!

What gears and what wheel size does it have is the bigger question?
i get 10-12 no matter what...mine is a 92 with 177k on it and its an auto.. e4od to be exact. but i didnt get this for gas mileage...i got it for reliability and torque
b4 is a 3.73 rear. I still am not sure how your getting such good mpg..betcha the speedo is off or something. I could swear those trucks came with 225/whatever/15 tires not 16's.

Thanks for letting me know the gear ratio.
I've owned it less then a year. So I don't know what, if any modifications have been done to the engine or the computer program. It looks like it's stock but who knows. The speedometer might be off. But I can't see why it would be since it's running stock size tires. I can't really see a carpet company swapping gears.
All I care about is it handles hauling some heavy loads. It tows my 20 foot car trailer with no problems. And it gets much better mileage then my last F250 did to make the same trips.
And they are definitely 16" tires stock. It's an E250 not a E150. I've never seen a Ford 3/4 ton truck or van that came with 15" tires.

Old ones had 15's, but were talking probably around 92ish.
Wonder why it gets such good mpg, perhaps lack of 4wd, maybe different computer setup? If its a 96 it probably has mass air too. cool, but odd. GVWR is probably pretty high too Id bet so it aint that light and its gotta be less aerodynamic than the trucks..hmm..
I've got a 92 F250 w/4in Lift 35x12.5's, 351W, 4x4, ZF 5spd, 4.10's, and i'm at about 9 mpg all around. Before the lift and oversized tires i was at about 12 city 15 highway.
... and i'm pretty sure there aren't any 3/4 tons that had 15 in. rims unless the 2wd trucks came with them. I tried to put 15 in. rims on my 4x4 and they didn't clear the brake calipers up front.

I've owned well over a 100 old Ford trucks and vans and never seen any 15" 8 lug rims. I know Ford has made some oddball stuff but I've never seen any 15" 8 lug stock rims/tires.
Yep it's a roller cam engine with MAF. It's also OBD-II. So it's possible the carpet company could have installed an economy tune to save some money on fuel. Empty I would say it's close to 6,000 pounds. But really I don't care why. It's a big heavy tank that has good power, hauls a heavy load, tows my trailer well. So the mileage is just an added bonus.

All of my 2wd F250/E250's have been 16" or 16.5" tires except for a 56 F250 I had that had 17.5".
I have a 352 c.i. 5.0, but with alot of mods to help breathing, also newer ev6 injectors, and it is tuned dead on. With my latest adjustment to spark yesterday I got 23mpg on e10 on the way home and I have been averaging between 17-21 mpg before yesterday. My motor has loads of torque with 3.08 gearing. I can cruise 65 at 1675 rpm throttle slightly open....reading 1.3 on tps...that has a range of .93 to 4.75....but this is not really a fair comparison to vehicle in stock form, especially not knowing it's mechanical conditon or state of tune.
I know I'm responding to a super old post... but could you share the details of your 352 CI 5.0 build ?
