ignition switch help

'91 F150, 4.9L I6, 4spd, 4x4. Reg cab, long bed...manual everything & CC unknown by me.
Pretty sure the switch is fubar now. Previous owner mostly bypassed it with a toggle switch & push button but made it so the key still had to be in "start" for it to start, then has to be turned back to "run" to keep the CEL off.
I'd have thought the toggle switch takes the place of "run" and the button takes the place of "start" but with the key still being required for more then unlocking the column (if it even has that lock...) I dunno WTF is going on with it.

Does a new key/tumbler come with a new switch or is it like my car where the tumbler is one piece & the switch a 2nd piece?
How do I even get to it? Does it need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off?

No steering wheel puller needed. Ignition switch is seperate, should be bolted to the outer column tube. Sounds like it might be a connection problem. Some of those have a hook clip thing that can can cause issues
