Does anyone have a picture and location of the Air Suspension Pump on a 2002 Expedition. Mine has quit working and I cannot find it in my Haines Manual. Thanks for the help.
Pat
The expedition with the Suspension Air compressor that will not work is a 2002 with rear air suspension. I have not been able to check the fuse but I will look into that.
Is there anything else that could stop the compressor from working. My son in law drove the vehicle for a while with the bladders flat. Is it possible the adjustment in the rear is out or whack?
Pat
If he ran it with the air bags flat, chances are the pump ran continuously to feed those bags and overheated. The system has a protection override that shuts it off when hot. You should have a light on the dash to "check suspension." If that is on, turn off/on the pump switch under the front passenger dash to reset. It should work again providing all doors are closed on the vehicle due to the safety override.
If it still doesn't work, chances are he ran it until it simply got too hot and the overide didn't shut it off early enough and it will need to be replaced.

Be sure all your connection between the relay and the pump are secure and you air suspension switch is on. To test, all doors must be closed the ensure the solenoid are closed.
You can use a jumper wire (thicker gauge) to bypass the relay to see if the pump works. I believe the two left wires (looking at the plug to the relay with the clip on top) are what you need to jump (connect). If the pump fires (it won't fill the bags though) then you may have a bad relay. (Be sure the doors are closed) If it doesn't, check your connection to the new pump. If that's ok, you may have a bad pump.
Also, try to disconnect the neg. battery for 20 minutes to reset the computer. I installed a new compressor and it took a while for the system to know its there, but it finally fired.
One other thing, it's possible you have a degraded wire in the harness. Close the doors, turn the key to accessory and go jiggle the wires to the pump. If it fires, there is your problem. You only have like one minute to jiggle the wires, though, and the system will then stop sending the signal.
We have checked the fuse and tried flipping the switch under the dash. The compresson still does not come operate. Any suggestions concerning a resonalble company to by a replacement compressor from. Are there any lessons learned I need to be aware of to facilitate this repair?

I have a 98, so I'm not sure if they are the same style. I have put three in mine, one was defective and the second one may not have been bad; it may have been the relay and I didn't no how to test it at the time.
I bought my last one from Arnott. It was cheaper and easy to install (good instructions)I had an issue 6 months later regarding a short in the wires. Since it was my only truck I could not have 2 weeks down time to return it. I took it out again ahd fortified the wires coming out of the unit with tape. It seems they wanted to bend over in the tight space. It's possible my wiring harness is degraded and the cause and not the unit thats why I suggested shaking the wires. Also, it is recommended to change the relay at the same time,
Great info from you in this thread. We have a similar issue with our 2000 Expedition 4x2.
Here's the history: we have never had problems with the air suspension, such as high frequency of compressor activating indicating leaks, etc. One morning we woke up to find the truck all the way down in back. The compressor will not turn on. We jumped the compressor and ran it for a minute, but the truck did not lift. Pressure did build up in the dryer. Is this an indicator the relay is faulty?
You would think so, but my concern would be why didn't the rear pump up. Unless of course you jumped the relay with the key off so that none of the height controls were getting power...
SFGGAMER,
Check the pressure line coupler that is located just above the steering box under the hood on the driver's side. I goes bad and starts to leak at such a rate that the pump just can't keep up with leak. A simple replacement.

The compressor ran for a minute! Is that because you undid the jumper?
The fact that it ran when you (jumped?) by passed the relay is an indicator that the relay could be bad.
When you had the compressor running, if you are asking if the truck did not lift, or the fact there was pressure in the dryer, are indicators of a faulty relay, the answer is no - those are not indicators of a faulty relay.
