Need help with the secret?

I have the 351W going into the 1951 F1 and have decided to go with the serpentine belt. Anyone know the secret to getting the "V" pully off the alternator and the power steering pump, short of a cutting torch?

Thanks for any help here.

at least for the PS pump pulley, you will need the puller tool. you can rent/borrow free from autozone.

I don't remember a press on pulley for the alternator tho..

They are a tapered fit as I recall; get the nut off and put a propane torch to the hub of the pulley, then tap the shaft. Don't overdo it with the torch, tho. (or the hammer)

I can not get the nut off without distorting the fins on the pully. However the idea with the torch sounds like a doable thing. I'll try again.
Thanks for your help.

From what I recall on alternators is that the pulley is a slight press fit but it mainly held on with the nut. The best way to get the nut loose is to use and impact wrench. I typically toss a red rag over the fins/pulley and hold it by hand while hitting it with an impact. Once the nut is loose everything else just falls right off.

The power steering pulley is pressed on. You can borrow a puller/installer at the local parts houses. You'll never get it off with anything else.

The alternator pulley should only be held on with the nut. It might be stuck on the shaft. Have changed many of them when I used to work in the auto parts stores to install the customers pulley.

Use an impact...it works well. Same as what cparks said, they are just a bolt on.

The impact did the job, thank you. Now I need to find the serpentine pully for the alternator.

Sometimes...not always, you can talk with your parts store and see if they can help you with that. I have done that a few times with cores and whatnot.

I wouldn't buy one if you don't have to...but thats just me. Seriously man...call your local parts slinger and talk with em. You might just save yourself $40.
