Icon 4.5" lift is finished!

The ICON 4.5 “ lift is installed. The rear, like the front, was not as easy as I expected. When I tried to install the One Up Offroad (OUO) adjustable six inch blocks to the rear, I found that after I shifted the rear axle forward, to center it, the U-bolts were blocked from dropping into place, by alignment horns on the small 1" block that sits between the main spring pack and the overload spring. I called OUO and talked to the owner. He was extremely helpful, and talked me through the fabrication steps that needed to be done. He was also very curious about the project since mine is the first 2011 F350 that he knows about that has used his blocks. He asked me to send pictures and to call him any time that I needed advice. Basically, you have to cut the alignment horns off the 1" block(Sawsall), and then drill a new 7/16" holes, 5/8" to the rear, in the cast iron, domed, u-bolt saddles that sit on top of the each spring pack. I have included pictures of this process in my Photobucket album.

Overall, the quality of the Icon lift is excellent. Their failure to send the correct instructions, months after they were aware of a problem, in my opinion, is a sign of poor business practice. The quality of the OUO rear blocks is amazing. I highly recommend them. I am very glad that I purchased the 6" block. A 5" would have made the pickup sit low in the rear. I think the pickup sits level on this lift.

On a test drive on which I drove on a dirt road, 25 mph town driving, and one short 70 mph run on the highway, I found that the pickup performed perfectly. Steering was crisp and the alignment, caster, and camber, as promised by ICON, were dead on.

I have installed the Toyo 35x12.50-18 tires and Weld wheels, that I ran previously on my 2001 F350

I’m happy with my choice, but I will share any problems that may come up.

Love the look, well done!

Would be interested how the ride compares to stock....better, about the same, or more stiff/bumpy

Hey JWeidert,

The ride is slightly stiffer, but that may be the tires. You can feel that the center of gravity has moved higher. It rides like a one ton truck should, in my opinion

Sounds good, glad everything worked out. I'm going to call trucktoyz tomorrow and try to dig up a little advice on the set up I'm after. I have a feeling it's going to be very similar to yours, just slightly taller to accommodate 37s.

When I see pics of lifted trucks like yours, it makes me wish that I didn't need mine for towing

Hey Great Danes,

I have a 36' 5th wheel that I pulled around the Western states for 9 years. The trailer weighs 14.5K dry. Loaded, it was over 16K. My 2001 F350 had a 4.5" Procomp lift and 35x12.50-18 tires. I have a dump trailer that I load to 14K. If my poor old 7.3 could do all that work with a 4.5" lift, the 6.7 will be just fine. I stuck a picture of the 2001 with the 5th wheel in my album called "My Fords"

Nice work - what was the total cost of your project?

Looks Awesome!!!!! I want to put a lift on mine, but it wouldn't fit in the garage any more. Looks like I'll just have to build a bigger garage!!

Hello RDenis,

Thanks. I spent the morning cleaning the shop, putting away tools, and gazing out the door at the pickup. I really like the way it turned out.

The lift with the solid panhard bar and OUO adjustable 6" block was about $2,500. I had the wheels already, but spend $1,875 on the brand new Toyos

Thanks King Ranch,

When we built our house 5 years ago, I had tall doors installed in the 4 car garage since my 2001 F350 and my wife's Excursion were both on 4.5" lifts
