Ok...simple question:
Does removing the stock exhaust REALLY make a difference ? I've heard open from turbo back (4")...I've heard just take the cat off...and various other setups. Any real world stories ? Thanks.
Amazing that no one responded, I bypassed my cat and put on a 4" pipe today. seems to run fine, better even, alltho I did retain all pipe and muffler/cat, just in case. was trying to get my fuel mileage up from 13.
but I think I found something else, my engine temp was at 145F and it should have been 193F with the thermastst working, cold engine, bad fuel mileage.
I put MBRP 4" straight pipes from turbo back. I find my bottom end is a little bit more torquey, but I haul with this truck every day. Other than that, it's loud as crap. As for mileage, I don't think any if at all.
It seems that most people have been changing exhaust systems for the sound rather than the hp/torque gains. Is the whole purpose to free up the exhaust flow for increased torque or is there a gain that is not mentioned? I want to do the mods that help with the performance but it seems that spending the money on something simply for sound is not for me. If you can get the same gains by simply performing a cat delete why then do the whole exhaust? what am I missing-the sales points show performance gains but are they real?
I went with the cat & muffler delete. Bought the pipe for the cat so if it ever happens that for some reason I need to put in back on I can. Cut the muff of had pipe welded in there. All stock size. I don't mind it being a bit noisy
As for performance gains I did not notice any and fuel economey did not improve until the new injectors were installed. But I do not have any performance mods.
Just wanted to hear the turbo sing and maby let it run a bit cooler

In reality, there is little to very little HP/Torque gains(according to dyno testing) The real gain is in EGT's. Especially for guys like me that tow often.
i put straight pipes on my truck and i didnt really notice much if any performance gains. maybe 1 mpg. but it sounds really cool though haha. and it lowered the egts about 200*
I have 4" MBRP turbo back. Approximately 200 F drop in EGT while towing. Additionally, replacing the turbo up-pipe to delete the baffle for the EGR cooler got a significant change. The same load of firewood, same trailer, same amount, pulling the same hills in overdrive. Before the up-pipe swap I would drop a gear on at least 6 occasions to and from the ranch, not now. No change in mileage to speak of. But felt power while towing and drop in EGT most definitely. That's with MBRP muffler and cat delete.
03 cc drw 4x4 i installed the MBRP 4" ss turbo back with the muffler, but cat delete. also the dual tail pipes. it lowered my egt about 150 deg. while towing. also has a cool turbo whine now that it did not have. and a nice deep throaty sound. very happy with the system.
I have 4" turbo back, cat delete on mine. Turbo whistles like a jet. 1 mpg gain. I did the EGR full delete at the same time, so that had some influence too. VGT numbers are a bit higher at idle.
