Absoutely low fluid can cause the problems you have. Like I said before, you better hope it is the fluid level or it becomes a trans rebuild. You may have done enough damage driving it around already to require a rebuild.
Big Greenie is right about the fluid. The transmission is nothing but a hydraulic pump. Fluid is diverted through valves and that is what gives your forward/reverse and the gears. No fluid=no forward/reverse motion. Low fluid also means that things burn up really fast. Heat is a transmissions worst enemy. At this point, if I was you, get it to a shop and don't drive it there. It maybe too late by now. For some reason I don't think it is fluid level. If it was, it wouldn't go into forward/reverse at all and be able to shift. It would slip through the gears and gear changes. Something else is going on. Have you checked your fluid level? Just an FYI, when I worked at a Ford dealer years ago, we would brand spanken new vehicles come in with 5 miles on them that needed new engines/transmissions. Nothing is immune whether it is new or not. Good luck!
just checked, the level is a bit above full and it looks like the oil was just changed, it's fresh. even if i need to rebuild it it's not a big deal, i was hoping that it will be something inexpensive

the guy who sold it to me said that the pump is faulty, that's what his mechanic told him, in that case was there a chance to damage the transmission driving it?
