I have a "new to me" 2000 Ford F-150 RWD Lariat. I love it! The only problem I have is that I am getting what I think is a misfiring cylinder. There is no "Check Engine Light" yet but at Auto Zone, I did produce these two codes on their computer: P0171 & P0174. I guess this means that there is a "lean" mix of fuel in both banks of the engine? Anyway, I have had misfires at about 40-55 MPH both yesterday & this morning. The car seems to be moving forward, then it feels like the engine is shooting a dud. It gets over the problem and at higher speeds, it has no problem cruising strong.
What engine?
Coil on each plug or coil packs and plug wires?
If you have plug wires:
open hood in a dark place
Start engine
look for a glow along the wires or sparks arcing
Anything like that - replace all the wires!
If COPs, order a set from Amazon or eBay (should be less than $100 for all 8)
Replace all of them along with the plugs.
I had a solid missfire on #3 under load, replaced the COPs and plugs and no more misfire.
I have a 97 xlt with the 5.4
I have a 2000 5.4 V8. I'm not sure if it is coils over plugs or not. The mechanic that originally noticed the problem guessed it needed a new coil pack but since it was not to "Check Engine Light" status, he could not tell me which cylinder's coil pack needed to be replaced. I guess I will have to go look at it! Thanks for getting me started!
BTW, is it pretty cheap to replace all the coil packs? I'm a newbie on getting under the hood!
Its COPs. the 5.4 got them starting in 97.
I bought 8 new coils on Amazon.com for less than $100 shipped.
I'd have to look at my receipt from the parts store to see how much the plugs were.
Its a pain replacing the coils and plugs. I only did 3 on the passenger side and I'm thinking of calling a couple of places to see what they would charge to do the rest with my parts.
I'm glad you said that about them being a pain. I have a great mechanic but I'm cheap. But if it's a big hassle, I might let him do it. He's an honest dude.
