Well I decided to change my fuel filters for the first time yesterday. I got the new 4616 style from my local dealer. Everything went well for my first time. 25 Degrees and 4" of new snow to roll around in, but oh well. Regarding the engine mounted fuel filter, the tech folder says to place the filter in the fuel bowl. The fuel filter had the ability to snap into the cap, the same as the other fuel and oil filter. Is this the proper install? Thanks for the help. I would not be able to do these things to my truck without the wealth of knowledge and assistance I get on this site! Thanks for helping me to reach 67K without a single problem!
Lower/frame rail fuel filter:
1) Remove drain plug and allow any water and fuel to drain out into oil drain pan. Be careful, this is the messy part - you will need paper towels!!
2) This is lowest part of filter housing, removing filter does not drain housing of water/moisture (can do afterwards if you forgot).
3) Remove old filter - some more fuel may run out (have paper towels handy).
4) Change O-ring and lube it well with fresh motor oil (not diesel fuel).
5) Install filter into cap (it will snap in)... but if a 4x4 you may have to place filter up into housing, then cap, then snap two together before you screw/push the entire assembly (cap and filter) into place in the housing due to tight fit.
6) Tighten all the way until cap is seated... do not worry about torque figures... just tighten all the way to ensure no leaks and that if you lubed the o-ring well... you will also be fine.
Engine mounted filter:
1) Unscrew cap.
2) Remove filter - discard
3) Remove old o-ring on cap
4) Install new o-ring and lube well with fresh motor oil
5) Install filter into cap (can't remember is this one snaps into place)?
6) Slowly install filter into housing and tighten cap all the way
Start-up Procedure:
1) Turn ignition key to on and allow fuel pump to fill both filter housings (do not start motor) - turn off.
2) Repeat step #1 again wait for glow plug light to go out and start truck.
3) Truck may have air in system and there may be a "puff" of white smoke... but that is OK.
4) Check for leaks at each filter... if none, you are done.
5) If any leaks, you may have "cut or torn" one of the o-rings due to not using enough fresh motor oil not careful when installing the caps back into the housings (becareful not to cross-thread).
After the first time... this process can be done in 30 - 45 minutes.
while you are under the truck and changing the lower filter look to change out the 6mm hex nut water bleeder for an improved one they sell at the dealer. slightly bigger and has a threaded *** in case you strip out the hex nut. somewhere in the tech forums is a pic and a part number. http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-05-19.php
