I'm going to put a Lunati #06169 cam in my 74 460. I'm also going to throw some Dove C heads on it. I was wondering what pushrods (length) and rockers I will need to use for this?? I don't think the factory 429 rockers will work?? It's been about 7 years since I've worked on anything like this so I don't remember what needs to be done. If you guys could provide me with advice and some parts #'s that would be great!!
i would go with some roller rockers or roller tip rockers with that setup. there are many different brands out there depending on how much you want to spend and quality you want. Scorpion by most accounts makes a cheap good quality rocker. also make sure they are made for a 460 application and not made for the big block chev and used on the 460. they use the same basic ratio and stud but the pushrod cups are different and when used on the 460 causes an incorrect pushrod geometry compared to ones speciffically made for the Ford. i think Crane uses the same rocker for BBC and BBF and most others use different rockers for each. try to stay away from the Procomp stuff. heard some horror stories on the quality and fit and finish on these rockers.
you will need to change the positive stop rocker studs to aftermarket adjustable rocker studs like offered by ARP. they are pretty cheap. you will also need guide plates as the roller rockers are not self aligning like the factory rockers (never use the factory rockers on an aftermarket cam. they rob hp, wear the tips of the valves and usually can't handle the extra lift without binding or breaking). as far as the pushrod lenght you will have to determine this after doing the above then using an adjustable pushrod checker (you can home make one by using one of the old pushrods and cutting about an inch out of the middle then tapping it to use i think a 5/16" stud with nuts to make it adjustable or buy one) to set the proper rocker geometry and sweep up. then order a set of proper lenght hardened pushrods (necessary with the guide plates) from your local shop.
that is the proper way to do it and the one i would recommend to do.
Thanks for all of the info!! I think I'm pretty much getting everything figured out now, but could someone tell me if these are the studs that I will need for the Dove heads??
