when we bought the truck, no sound came from the speakers, all functions worked on radio, volume control, tuning, bass/treble etc.
one day on a cold start, when cycling the plugs, the radio as on. after it warmed up, it worked fine. volume control worked, tuning, bass/treble. when driving to the shop, it just faded to nothing. been the same since, no sound, but all functions work....
Does your truck have the premium sound system? If so it has an external amplifier installed in addition to the radio. It sounds to me like you have an intermittent connection to the power on the amp. You could always trace the wires out if you aren't sure. Make two short "U"s out of a piece of coat hanger and insert them into the holes on either side of the radio. This releases the latches that fasten it into the dash. (There's a special tool for this, if you feel so inclined, but the coat hanger trick works just as well.) Pull the radio out of the dash (it might take some side to side wiggling to get it to come) and check the wiring connections on the rear of the radio. You can trace the wiring harness out to find your amp under the dash if you have one. Just check for loose connections first off.
BTW, that mod list on your sig is growing! Hard to leave it alone isn't it?!
DIY: im not sure about the premium sound, it did sound nice when it was working! do i need to remove the trim? or do i just remove the radio as is from the dash? will look into today when measuring my brakes....
and yes, the mod list is growing,it came with the first 3 mods when we bought it, besides that, just reading up on the forums here and figuring it out from there....
I bet it has premium sound. Is it the factory radio. Mine did the same with the aftermarket I have in my 94. Come to find out it was just barely making connection and would go in and out.
My guess is the head unit has a short in it or the connection for the speakers is loose. The speakers are on one plug and power and such is on the other.
the two wired connectors are all good. i seem to have a problem with the antenna connection, either the female or male end. a few times it worked great, a few times it was fuzzy, a couple times it had nothing, plugged in the ipod cassette adapter and bam....sound!
although only left side speakers....
this will work for now until its a needed repair.....which is never
if you have a cassette player then it doesnt have the premium sound option, i beleive that only came with the trucks installed with the radios that played cd's. if it was an antenna problom youd get static all the time i would guess may be a problom with your deck.
