I have a 92 Eddie Bauer. When I drive the Rear ABS light and the red Brake light appear ont he dash. I also hear a whine from the rear of the truck when I drive and it shifts hard into second gear. I checked my brake fluid it is full. Does anyone no what the problem is?
I'm no mechanic, but I'll take a stab at the whining sound. My 93 makes the same noise & I think it's the fuel pump. I noticed it this weekend when I rolled the carpet back in the cargo area to dry up a water leak. It was very noticeable when not being muffled by the carpet. Also, it seems to be a consistent pitch (not increasing or decreasing with engine rpm or traveling speed). I could be wrong, but it's something to think about. Good luck.
the whine could be associated with the rear end. The thing to check is the ABS/speed snesor in the top of the rear Axle housing. They are known to get filthy over time and it messes with their functioning. This sensor sends wheel speed info to the ABS computer AND the main computer for control functions in the E4OD. Both could be symptoms of a dirty or failed sensor. From most reports, pulling the retaining bolt and slipping the sensor out to clean it off has yeilded major improvements for many with these problems.
If you managed to discover that the source of the "whine" is indeed the rear end, you may want to drain the oil, remove the inspection cover and take a look inside for damaged gearing. if the oil has never been changed its a perfect time to do so.
