Transfer case grinds when stopping abruptly!
To start, I just changed the oil in the transfer case, it's topped off. That's the first thing I checked!
Please help, I have a 3 hour road trip tomorrow in this truck and I'm hoping this is a simple fix!
My truck is a 1986 F250, 6.9 Diesel XLT Lariat
What type of transfer case is in my truck?
Thanks,
Andrew
If it were me, I wouldn't be taking that thing on any 3-hour road trips with it behaving like
that....
Until you can get it fixed, you might try shifting to Neutral (depressing the clutch if a
manual) before stopping in an attempt to not irritate the situation and cause it to appear,
but that's merely masking the problem.

I've driven it all winter, plowing driveways, pulling people out. Most the time I'm never more than an hour away, and the grinding has become more frequent so I'm a bit worried.
It's automatic, I will try throwing it into Neutral before braking from now on. Also I'm doing a full engine rebuild this summer and possibly doing the zf5 transmission swap with a new transfer case. I'd like a short term fix to get me through another month...
