Turbo Tech
I usually hang out in the IDI forum, but sometimes pop up in here to find info for my Dad's 03 7.3.
I'm looking for specs on the stock 7.3 PSD turbochargers. I have some knowledge I've gained over the past, maybe you guys could set me straight if I'm correct or not.
-Model year 99 is different than the 99.5-03
-The A/R is somewhere around .86, the upgrade housings are 1.00 A/R to reduce EGT's
-The 99-03 7.3 PSD turbo's are waste-gated
Here's the thing...I'm looking for specs and common upgrades to the stock turbo's such as larger downpipes and different compressor wheels.
I've read a little bit about the wicked wheel...about how it fixes surge and flutter.
Are surge and flutter felt at high RPM's?
Basically, I'm looking to turbo my 6.9 IDI with a real thorough build. Looking to run about 24 psi of boost, with ALL the supporting internal modifications. I'd like a smaller A/R because they spool up at lower RPM's, and I'd love to boost right away. The engine will be coupled with a manual transmission....so low RPM spooling would be best.
Member Dave Sponaugle in the IDI section has built a killer 6.9 and I'd like to follow in his shoes with my build.
I saved this from a post of his.
"I am running a .84 A/R turbo on my 6.9. I have plenty of fuel turned to it.
I start building boost at low RPM's, 10 psi at 1500.
But my high RPM boost numbers seem to max out around 24 to 25 PSI.
My 97 has a 1.10 A/R, and I was blown away at how low the boost was on the stock engine. As well as I remember, I have never seen over 15 PSI, yet.
70 MPH run down I 79 in my IDI, boost from 5 to 22 PSI.
70 MPH run down the same stretch in my 97, boost from 1 to 7 PSI."
That post is what made me realize the difference the A/R makes in relationship to RPM turbo spooling. I'm attracted to the 99.5-03 turbo's because they may fit my needs pretty well.
And because I know how much everybody loves pictures, here's what I'm planning on building. 65 F350 body set on a 95 F150 chassis (that will be reinforced) with a kickin' turbo 6.9. Planning on running a few truck pulls for fun at the local fairs in the fall, snow plowing in the winter, and just having a fun pickup to enjoy driving around town towing junk around. Nice lightweight and reinforced F150 with a smoke-machine under the hood pushing coal out the stacks, it ought to haul rear end!
I'm sick of these friggin Chebby pretty boys in their Dura-trash trucks...time to show them Ford rules!

I'm sure the ol' Ford can hold up...I won't be able to catch an empty Dura-crap, but I think I'll be able to catch a loaded one. Here's my proof, posts #33 and #42: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ve-s-is-3.html
SO...who has some stories to share about smoking a Duratrash!? I'm all ears for stories about spanking the competition!!
P.S....When my 85 needs a replacement engine, I'm thinking I would pull the 6.9 from the 65 and put it int he 85....and then put a 2000-2003 7.3 in the 65! 7.3 PSD with all the modifications coupled with a ZF6...oh man, I'm LOVING the thoughts!
