I just bought a '98 Expedition 5.4 4x4 with tow package, drove flawlessly on the test drive(of course), but now a couple of days later it is hesitating when shifting into and out of OD. When the speed reaches between 40-65 mph it starts jerking like it can't decide to shift or not. If you put your foot into it it will shift firmly and go on, or if you ease up on the gas it will stop trying to shift. The truck has 191,000 miles on it and I got it for a song so taking it back is not an option.
That shift confusion is normal. Mine does it at the same speeds, my previous 99 F150 did it as well. It is the torque convertor cycling.
I have found that my truck doesn't like very light throttle. If you try that at 40-45 it locks up the convertor and you gain speed pretty quickly, when you let off the convertor unlocks, you slow and toe into it again at which point the trans trys to lock the TC again. It is a bit jerky but I have accpeted it as just the kind of programming you get on a budget vehicle. I have done over 50k miles on two vehicles with the same issue. The trans is fine.
