i posted this in my year of truck section and was sent here so... i got a 72 302.
it does run but smokes some and i just dont know the engine. going to rebuild it but having a hard time choosing a machine shop. i live in canton, GA. anybody have any suggestions? thanks.
What do you hope to accomplish with the rebuild. Keep it stock or modify it. Sending an engine out for rebuild can take weeks or even months to get it all done.
If all you want is a stock rebuild then consider looking for a 302 already done by a engine rebuilder. You can get them through most auto parts stores. You can do a swap in a weekend. You will reuse some the the bolt on parts of your old engine but the block & heads will be new/rebuild.
Buying a rebuild long block would be the quickest way and sometimes a cheaper way to get a new enigine in your truck.
You can still change the cam in the long block before installing it. You can buy a new intake and carb for it as well. This should accomplish what you say you want to do.
The thing is unless you have a machine shop close by and they are willing to work with you to get your rebuild a quick turn around you could be without your truck for a few weeks or months.
If it's a project truck them that may be fine, but if you use your truck, even occasionally then it won't be available to you during this time.
The only time I ever used a machine shop was when I was building a engine with performance/racing in mind. If stock them just buy a rebuild all ready done.
