Oil pressure problems

Having problems with this truck once again. When truck gets good and warmed up on my way to work (8 miles) I have problems when I stop at the gate to come on base. Seems when I stop it wants to die but doesn't, it just kind of shutters but stays running. I notice when it does this the oil presure gauge goes from the normal reading down to the L on the gauge. Does anybody have any idea why it could be doing this? Also when it gets warmed up it still dies when I put it in reverse and when I start it back up my oil pressure reads on the L too. It hasn't been feeling like it has the power that it did when I bought it either. Don't know what the problem is, it has plenty of oil in it. Thanks for any suggestions.

mine does the same thing as with the pressure dropping when I stop. as far as the truck dying when you put it in gear, maybe your idle speed is set too low. how fast does it idle in park? mine idles at about 750 in park, but when I put it in gear the idle goes down to about 550, but it does stay running.

Not sure what it idles at I don't have a tach as of yet. I know if it stayed at the same idle when cold it would be fine.

If you think you're having oil pressure problems, then let me suggest adding an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. Relying solely on the dash gauge could be a mistake.

You'll need to get the appropriate fittings to add the gauge. Built a "T" connector to add just under your oil pressure sending unit, and pipe your new mechanical gauge into that. That way you have a true pressure reading to rely on, and you won't affect the dash functionally.

This is where I mounted mine:

Oh, and for the other idling issue...when was the last time you did a complete tuneup? Not just plugs and wires, but timing and mixture and idle speed and all that?

I haven't ever done a tune up on it. Just bought it about 10 days ago but it is in the cards for when it warms up for a while. I am also planning on getting mechanical gauges thanks for the idea.

Yeah, I'd get the basics done, like a tuneup, ASAP. It's hard to tell whats really going on if your regular maintenance items are out of whack.

Start there, get some gauges, and then you'll have real numbers to work with.

Get some diagnostic tools. Timing light, tach, vacuum gauge, things like that. Takes the guesswork out of the equation.

Good luck with your new truck!!
